Q: are pallettes leak proof so I can travel and paints won't run into each other?

No. Wipe or let it dry before storing.

Q: Can this be separated into 2 pieces? I like a smaller palette and would only use half at a time.

It seems to come apart and go back together pretty easily. I don't know how the hinge/connector would fair over time, might start getting loose and not stay together anymore.

Q: Does this work well for keeping oils moist?

No. It is primarily for watercolors.
