Great movie, based on a true story
Sally Field is an amazing actress and does a great job in this movie. I lived very near Betty in Michigan so I knew the story. I think this movie is a classic and it is scary to think there are still so many places where woman as no voice or right to determine her own destiny.

Not without my daughter.
I've read the book many times so lm very aware of the awful true story. The film was incredibly moving and Sally Field and the little actress who played Mahtob were incredibly realistic and believable. I was slightly disappointed with the escape scenes.ln the book it was over the mountains in freezing snow.however it is a very moving account.lve watched it 4 times,so far,in two weeks.l can recommend the DVD as a true account of a very courageous mother and her beautiful daughter.

I couldn't believe it was a true story!
If you like a good, dramatic, heart gripping story. Then, this movie is for you. It follows a family where the mive to another country and the rules of that country are different and the Father changes his whole personality, to be more controlling and a little more mental. Definitely, worth the watch.

Very close to the book's text and a must-watch to help understand life in Iran for women!
I knew this film from the 1980s when it first came out and had also read the book before watching the film. So, I can confirm that it stays close to the book's text. Both tell the true story of an American woman who married an Iranian doctor in the USA. He persuades her to come on a Christmas holiday with him and their little daughter to meet his family in Teheran. This was during the times when Khomeini had recently become the head of state there. I believe everyone who hasn't yet should watch this film or read the book of the same title to get an understanding of how things were in Iran for women at that time and they probably haven't improved much, as this type of rigid Islam doesn't permit that...I have always loved Sally Field as an actress and she stars admirably in this, as does the little girl who plays the daughter! Alfred Molina, who some of you may remember from the film "Chocolat" with Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp, played the Iranian doctor very convincingly indeed.

True story awe-inspiring
I like true stories and for her courage and determination to escape. I didn't like the way she kept telling her husband Iran was uncivilised and backward. I'm sure she did say this, in real life, but it gives ammunition to those from the middle East who would seek to discredit her. Her concerns about her daughter being raised there were valid but to add an attitude of victim hood from the first moment she gets off the plane, did not do well for the credibility of the story. Better to watch an interview where she tells the account.
