Is this the same as just using a fork?

The tines a very sharp and less that 1/16 in diameter. A fork could leave some big, ragged holes in the casing.

So its a 3 pronged corn holder with a 20X markup?

You could use a corn holder but the tines are much bigger. I'm not sure if that would make a difference.
