IMPORTANT INFO AS TO WHY YOU NEED ONE OF THESE
I couldnt recommend buying this thing enough -I'll need to explain why:I read mixed reviews of how effective these warmers are. Being a keen walker who occasionally hikes I decided to give one a try and I'm very glad I did! When I first bought the warmer I fueled it up and lit it properly (there are lots of useful videos on youtube on how to do this). During this 1st test I was in my living room on a cold night, but I did have the central heating on. The results of holding the heater by itself were underwhelming. Upon putting it in the padded insulating bag (which is supplied with it when you buy it) the heater became slightly warm. I would estimate 20 to 25 celcius. -this was in my living room, which was about 18 celcius.I wasnt too impressed but I decided to try it outside at some point.Tonight is cold, damp and windy outside, I live near the beach.I went for a quick walk along a costal path in the wind. I put on warm clothing including a waterproof coat and heavy jeans.Holding the warmer in my hand (inside its bag) it was good, but started to lose heat -it simply wasnt producing heat quickly enough -because the heat was being drawn away into the cold wind.Placing the warmer in my jeans pocket it then became quite impressive, in spite of the sea wind, my upper leg felt rather warm.Next, I decided to place it in the 'Napoleon pocket' on my coat -this is the chest pocket. WOW!Inside my jeans the warmer was reasonable, however in the chest pocket of my coat it was simply amazing. Insulated by the material of my chest pocket the warmer easily reached the 20 to 25 celcius it had done in my living room. However, whilst 20-25c in a warm living room isnt impressive, when you are outside on a bitterly cold night it is a very different matter! It felt as if I had a small hot water bottle about the size of a hand propped against my side. Given that some coats have 2 chest pockets, I believe you could run two of them at once which would warm your whole torso. I also note that in spite of it being in my pocket (which was only slightly unzipped to let air in) the enclosed space didnt cause the warmer to go out.Obviously one of these warmers wouldn't be enough to save you in a truly serious outdoors situation. They are no substitute for proper clothing, BUT they are very useful. Give their simple and foolproof design and the fact they keep warmth for a full 12 hours they could be a big help in the cold.If you are outdoors, maybe walking through woods, moors or along a coast in damp and cold conditions having one (or two!) of these in your pocket (rather than using it as a hand warmer) it will make a big difference to your comfort levels!

Great bit of kit
I've only ever used the reusable chemical hand warmers in the past, and they don't come close to this.Filling is easy with the included plastic filler, and I filled it half way to test. Others have complained that it can be difficult to light for the first couple of uses but that wasn't my experience. It was easy to light with a tea light candle (using torch style burners isn't recommended) and it took a good hour to get up to full steam. Placing it into its pouch and then into a pocket has limited benefit, due to (what I could gather) limited oxygen supply to the burner and so placing it into the kangaroo pocket on a hoodie without the pouch worked best for me.It burned longer than advertised, and it does get hot to the touch if supplied with enough oxygen. Zippo claim that it's odourless, but in my test there was a very clear smell of the lighter fluid which doesn't bother me in the slightest, but is worth noting. Also worth noting, is that the burner part is a consumable and will require replacement after around 70 burns according to Zippo. I've bought two in anticipation of this and they can be had from Amazon for £5 or so.Overall, its definitely worth having if you spend time outdoors or indeed any cold environment and I found that placing it against the torso has a bigger benefit than against an extremity.

Very good, Nice heat and long lasting
After reading some mixed reviews I wanted to give a realistic view on this device. Firstly I was let down by another non amazon supplier on the Zippo Fluid so ended up buying Coleman fuel from Cotswold with a little trepidation! The good news is that Coleman fuel works a treat and for just £9 a litre its cheap. I followed the instructions precisely and on the first use carefully put 12 hours of fuel in and then importantly left it upright for 5 minutes for the vapour to spread. I then lit the top of the catalyser with a butane lighter for about 10 - 15 seconds. Now initially it was just lukewarm and I was worried that was as good as it might get..... but after about 20 minutes was getting hotter nicely while still in the sock, now what I didn't realise is that if you open the sock up it lets in more oxygen and gets hotter and if you pull the sock down a bit it gets really hot, in fact too hot to touch the metal. It seems to work really well in a pocket with the top of the sock cord not too tight. The effect of being in a coat or trouser pocket seems to insulate the heat nicely. I did a heat test using a baking thermometer on the outside of the metal case and it reached over 70 deg Celsius opened right up so all the vents showed with the sock just half covering and then with the sock completely over it and the cord loose went back to about 45 Deg. You can see the catalyst glowing orange in the dark and if you blow on it, its glows more brightly hence the heat being controlled via oxygen access. Its now nice and warm still after 11 hours of lighting. If you buy Coleman fuel it has a large neck on the bottle so I made a bigger hole with a modelling knife in the little small filler bottle that comes with the Handwarmer. It appears that the Zippo 125 ml fuel has a small spout which is probably easier. The Coleman fuel has a slight odor close up but isn't noticeable once the warmer is in a pocket and people say the same about Zippo fuel. Its a nice tactile feel with the curved edges and makes it feel very slim, it seems well made and for the price will be good value compared to the chemical hand warmers I also use which still have there uses in gloves and shoes (The 12 hour Zippo is just a little too large)This Zippo is going to be just great for Winter Cycling. Motorbiking, Skiing and Winter walks - Happy Days!!

Works nicely
Got this for our cold weather. Both myself and my wife suffer from zombie fingers. This get hot! Perfect compared to the other hand warmers I've bought over the years.

A complete joke of a product & waste of money
Purchased this Zippo Hand Warmer with the intention of using during winter or other times when my hands are particularly vulnerable to the cold. The biggest waste of money I have spent in a while. The Warmer will not stay lit and running unless it receives adequate oxygen like a fire. So you must at all times keep the warmer open and exposed to the air in order for it to work. That's right! You cannot keep this within your pocket where it belongs or it will die out and need to be re-lit. If it is out of your pocket then not only does the little heater cool down rapidly but so do your hands as they too must in fact be out of your pockets to use it. This is the biggest waste of time ever. It truly is useless. The winters in my region aren't even that harsh compared to others. So I guarantee you will find this just as useless or worse if your climate dips anywhere below -5C. Save your money. Go for a battery operated hand warmer, or even a chemical reactant hand warmer. This is a Joke.

Super efficace
