Q: After it wears down can it be replaced with another rod? If so what size would one purchase?

I have one and I've replaced the striker twice. You just have to find the right size to fit. I use mine all the time in the woods and for camping also.

Q: the descriptions say good for over 100 strikes. is this a typo ? i can get 100 strikes from the little flint in my zippo

The claim of 100 strikes is conservative. It MIGHT wear out that quickly if you used extreme pressure. But the ferro rod is not huge, and it does wear down. Mine will probably be gone before 200 strikes.

I couldn't see it believe a problem as a check in bag, definitely not for a carry on. In this case though, I wouldn't take someones word on amazon. Call TSA yourself and find out.

Q: can the flint striker be changed out once used up?

I agree in some part that the striker is not the best. Mine will not stay shut. But it is a decent one handed operation if that is what might be a possibility. I practice just to keep my skills up.
