Ultrasound may just keep us relevant as PCPs!
As a PCP in an outpatient practice since graduating residency 14 years ago (with a 5 year stint of full spectrum care in a mission hospital in a lower resourced country) I have really wondered if anything could bring Family Medicine physicians (in the US) like myself beyond what I have dreaded (relegation to a referral specialist); i.e. my only function is to refer internally to our specialty clinics.Ultrasound (POCUS—point of care ultrasound) in my humble opinion opens the door for those of us who have been cut out of the actual medical pie to get back into the actual practice of medicine. This text is a very readable introduction to the breadth of what we as family physicians can do for our patients. It lays out this material in a logical and easy to follow manner. If you are at all like me…waiting for imaging I order which for many of my patients comes at a huge cost (I see many uninsured/under Insured and I am not part of a big system so we don’t communicate easily with the big imaging groups who do our scans) it is so wonderful to have the tools in my own office to answer effectively, efficiently and at an affordable and a timely manner my patients clinical needs! But a text is needed and this is it!Each topic begins with Background of the diagnostic question, followed by a ‘how to’ section on the use of POCUS to answer the question, a clinical discussion of how POCUS seamlessly integrates with old algorithms of diagnostic work-up’s whilst improving both the sensitivity and specificity of the diagnostic process. A pearls and pitfalls section rounds out each chapter. As an example: DVTs; we are reminded of the clinical issues surrounding DVT prevalence and the difficulty of diagnosis and most recent literature updates on the topic; the authors then systematically train the reader how to do a POCUS exam of the deep venous system and then provide us with the Wells Criteria, how we can use it with the d-dimer and then they lay out pearls and pitfalls to avoid. We learn that we primary care practitioners can diagnose the majority of important deep vein thromboses for our patients in our offices!I’ve never been so engaged with a text (and completed a first time reading of it) so quickly in medicine. I’ll continue to go back to it as I start my own journey . Of note I did buy my own butterfly handheld US. This is a great source to have with that revolutionary piece of portable technology!

Essential for primary care
This book in addition to the online video resources has helped me integrate point of your ultrasound into my primary care practice. I am using ultrasound to diagnose rotator cuff and knee injuries. It’s also been very useful to get higher reimbursement for procedures. Include CPT codes at the end of each chapter.

Enganoso falar que tem vídeos
O livro fala ter disponível vídeos e eles não abrem no formato e-book. Péssimo e o livro não foi barato

Great intro to POCUS for PCPs
Good, broad overview of several POCUS exams. Love the information about how to get into POCUS when you are already out in practice, how to document, and learning about POCUS billing.
