Fantastic lantern, very bright, terrific extended mode allows easy reading, excellent battery life w/ rechargeable LiOn batter
I'm a sucker for LED lanterns. I guess I'm always awaiting the next apocolypse, or else I just know my power company will drop the ball at least one or times a year. Yeah, at least one of those two.Anyway, I've ambled my way through a series of LED lanterns through the years. The early ones were mostly horrible (weak light, used expensive D cells). The more recent ones have been appreciably better--although mostly they still use the expensive batteries (you know, C, D or 9V ones, the ones you never have on hand when the lights go out!)Anyway, so now UCO has a new LED lantern and...well...how could I resist. The twist here is that the lantern expands, kind of like a jack in the box, or maybe like the handle on your luggage, so that the light is far above the base. When I read that my first thought was "not sure why I'd want that". But after testing this lamp, I'd say "yeah, I get it." Because when the light do go out, I'm not just using my lantern to light my way when I walk around (in fact I can use a good flashlight for that). I'm using it to fill a room with light. And why do I actually want to fill a room with light? Typically so I can see what I'm doing. Which might be reading. Or actually, usually it's reading because without power I'm not able to watch TV, play my stereo, sit down at my computer, or all the other fun stuff. So reading it is.And this lantern is just fabulous (FAB-U-LOUS) for reading. pop it up in jack in the box mode, put your book below the light and you're all set to go. 500 lumens is more than enough to make it quite easy to read, even if (like me) your eyes aren't so good in dim light anymore...Now, while this lamp is fantabulous in jack in the box mode, in compact lantern mode, I might temper myself to call it just "very good". It's still very bight, but the dispersion of the light doesn't quite feel as broad as with other lanterns I've used. Now, it burns at 500 lumens, so even without huge dispersion, it's still quite usable. It's just not the game changer that it feels like in open mode.As for amenities, beyond the jack in the box mode, it has a variac dial that allows you adjust the brightness of the light (to presumably save on battery life). If you turn the dial to the left, it shines with a muted light that vasillates in color. I can't imagine any long term use for this unless you have 2 year olds around to amuse, but it's there. There are also 2 USB ports that will allow you to charge your USB device (presumably a phone). They don't give specs for these ports, so I tested them (see pics) and determined they offer 5V/1A charging--pretty standard. The lamp is powered by a rechargeable 8800mAh Li ion battery (included), so while using the charging ports is going to steal from your run time, there's plenty of juice to recharge even the biggest phone batteries roughly twice if you so wanted.Note that the lantern does not come with a charger or USB cable. You need to supply those yourself. In my testing, with the lamp fully charged and on the highest light setting I got close to five hours out of this lamp. That's pretty terrific given the amount of light it's giving off. If you run it at a lower setting you'd obviously get a lot more life. The company claims 70 hours on low. I didn't test that. But using it for low light reminds me of the old joke about how a study showed that mice lived twice as long on a near starvation diet. Punchline: Maybe, or maybe it just felt that way.On the whole, this truly is a great lantern. Nice and bright. Good run time. Terrific extended jack in the box mode that easily allows reading. USB jacks that you could use for an emergency charge (or two) if need be.The one caveat I'd mention is that because this uses a non-removable Lithium ion battery, if you are unfortunate enough to find yourself with a dead battery at a time of need, you can't just go to the cupboard and pull out a few emergency batteries. If you are likely to "be that person"--you know the one who forgot to recharge it last time you used it--then you might consider the sister lantern to this one, which uses replaceable batteries instead of the LiOn battery...

I wanted this lamp to add to our Hurricane kit for it REALLY LONG Lamp light and back up battery I LIKE IT>
I wanted this lamp to add to our Hurricane kit.... for several reasons......(( see photos )) One that is allows for a broad field of LIGHT .. which is very nice when it is pitch black out.. and you can illuminate the majority of the room you are in2nd. the REALLY long lamp light that is possible w this product.First I was impressed that the lamp allows rechargeable power for use.. it lets you Charge and re CHARGE this lamp I would imagine. having this fully charged and using the rechargeable battery FIRST. up to 5 hours on high and 70 hours on low.then recharge w my auto battery or a portable battery charger for an additional 70 HRS>>>>............... It also has an extension arm that elevates the light source from 12.5 inches to 26 inches,It has a rather ODD leather carrying strap... but other wise normal2 things I was not impressed w the charging cable included is only for use a weird power plug.... which WAS NOT INCLUDED>.. So you need to be prepared to supply your own charging cable and PLUG.There is a ' fun' aspect to this lamp that allow for some COLOR LIGHTS to be displayed .. nice for a Camping trip or a backyard camp out But for me.. I want this for SERIOUS lighting for power outages and storms. This is a rather pricey lamp so I would seriously inspect the spec's before going for it This isn't for a causal extra FLASHLIGHT... This is for serious campers or people like me that want it to use in an emergency situation. That said .it is a Nice USEFUL product that will be a nice addition to our storm supplies.

Just Great!
This is the second one I have purchased. Saw this a few years back in a magazine and gave it a try. The feature that makes this unit is the expanding light pole. Having the option to elevate the light is so simple that I wonder why every camp light does not have this feature. It does have some colored lights you can turn on at the base- fun for the kids I guess.Buy one and you will not regret it, IMO.

Variable light through a translucent lens that can fill the room.
Great camping variable light. Translucent lens prevents eye irritation. Can be raised to create reading light. Easily turned on and off. It is reported that the batteries can be recharged, although I have not yet done that.

Nice quality lantern
It's light weight. Easy to use. Easy to adjust the light intensity. I like the feature of lifting the upper piece to shine on a table or game. The light isn't so white that it's blinding. The kids loved the strobe feature as a night light in the travel trailer. We were gone for a week and did not have to charge it. Overall very satisfied with it.The only thing I would improve is the stubby little cord. The little seven inch cord is problematic. It doesn't come with a charging cube, but that's not a big deal as it's compatible with any cell phone charging cube. But the cord is so short it's extremely limited where it can be plugged in. Shown in my photo on the kitchen counter. Cord is stretched to the limit.

nice light, repackaged as used but was abused
This was a good light and cheap, repoackaged by AMAZON. but they didn't check it out very well. Someone put the batteries in incorrectly and they melted the batery carriers. I may return it because while it works it was damaged much more then cosmeticlly. Testing it out now.

Awesome Lantern
So far this seems like an awesome lantern that really spreads the light out. I was confused by the (6)D batteries mentioned in reviews and the instructions. This is the Sitka+ unit and has built in rechargeable batteries. You cannot install D batteries in this unit. If you want a unit that runs on D batteries you need the Sitka not Sitka+. We wanted the rechargeable batteries.

I highly recommend this lantern.
Really pleased with this purchase. This light is lightweight, bright enough for my campsite, and convenient. I had no issues with the battery. First camping trip was an 1,100 mile trip over 3 day period. I didn't need to charge it the entire trip and we did not try to conserve the battery. Great lantern!

Fantastic battery operated light for bedside or camping.
I needed a bedside light that wasn’t glaring but bright enough to read at night. I researched quite carefully because I had ordered some camping lanterns that are so bright I couldn’t use them at all. This light is fabulous, it is battery operated and has several settings for dimming or brightening. It has a button on top that allows you to pull the light Up for reading and then lower it for a softer light. This light exceeds my expectations and I Highly recommend it. It’s not cheap but it’s worth it.
