The CC2540 USB Evaluation Module Kit contains one CC2540 Bluetooth low energy USB Dongle. The dongle can be used to enable Bluetooth low energy on your PC. It can also be used as a packet sniffer for analyzing the BLE protocol and for software and system level debugging (use the free tool SmartRF Packet Sniffer). The dongle comes preprogrammed as a BLE host device monitor. To program and debug software running on the dongle, you need the CC Debugger or SmartRF05EB board (not included in the kit).

The device did not come with the BTLE packet sniffer, so please make sure you get the right firmware. I had to buy the TI CC Debugger which delayed the time I could use the device. Once reprogrammed (This is a fairly painless process), I was able to sniff the BTLE packet and quickly made progress in my prototype development; I could read the BTLE packet content between my iPhone and a TinyCircuit nRF8001 and apply this on a PC. One drawback of the TI packet sniffer software (that you download) is that you have to choose one of the 3 advertising channels to sniff a connection (unless you can force a channel on the device).
