Used every feature on first trip
I decided that I wanted a dedicated GPS unit for long trips. After a lot of somewhat confusing research into options and bundles, I chose this Garmin. I used every feature on my first trip. In fact, I really did not even know how to use the features when I started out and I actually captured an accident within 5 miles of home! The buttons were clear and I successfully saved the video of the accident and offered it to the police.Things I like* The touch control is significantly better than my last Garmin which is now 10 years old. The touch sensitively as virtually as good as my phone. I have not read any reviews that highlight this fact...but the old Garmins were really difficult and that is one reason I hesitated to upgrade for so many years.* The speed limit is displayed as well as the actual speed. A gentle red border appears when you go over the limit. (I found a few places that the speed limit was not accurate, but on the whole, the info was accurate and it was a great feature to have.)* there is so much other data that you can display...and you can choose what data you want to see. So many choices to match what you want.* Easy to use. It takes a little bit of experimentation but you can find everything without a user manual.* Easy to find upcoming restaurants, gas stations, and rest areas/stops.* Map updates are included in the base price..not incremental fees. This means I will likely do upgrades.* When I prop my phone up on the dashboard to follow a map, it can overheat in the sun. My old Garmin never overheated. I assume this will also be true of this unit - although my first trip was in the winter so I cannot confirm yet.Things that are not so great to me* While I can play with the unit and learn, I still like to see detailed user manuals with examples of the settings. There is a user manual on line, but it seems too basic to me. The manual can be on line, but it just needs to cover more details. For example, I would like to see examples of the different map color schemes - and a description of why each scheme is different.* I eventually found a lot of wonderful features mentioned above, but it took a long time. Once found, they were pretty easy to enable/disable. It just took a long time to understand how to find them in the first place. I would have liked to be able to look up "how to find rest areas" and find the answer quickly instead of punching through all of the menus. (back to an effective user manual)* The map upgrades are >4GB of data and take a long time. I think there is no way to get around this unless you live in a "fiberhood" in which you can get a Gb service. Hey - at least it is easier and faster to do that 10 years ago.* The upcoming travel delay feature is still a little confusing to me....some delays were missed and some were just not very clear. I think the instructions actually mention that the data can be a little spotty due to multiple reasons. None the less.....this kind of feature is implemented much better on phone mapping apps in my opinion.Other* Now that I have the camera....and have successfully captured an accident....I must wonder how to use the video. Do I send it to anyone that calls and asks for it? Do I only provide it to the police? Should I hold onto it until I get an subpoena? This has nothing to do with the unit, but any owner should consider these if they find themselves videotaping an incident.Overall - I give this 5 stars even though there are things that I think could be better. Just because it is not perfect does not mean it is not really helpful during a drive. I like it a lot.

Way above expectations
This is my second purchase of the DriveAssist 50 NA LMT. I loooved my first one, but I awoke one morning to find someone else loved it too. I rushed to buy a second after carefully assessing the competition. This one is still the leader. Here's the simple version of my review:I was looking for: 1. A full-time GPS that will work even when there is no data or cell phone service - a fairly frequent occurrence for those of us who enjoy touring the beauty of the western and mountain states. 2. A great dash cam because I'm growing more and more frightened of crazy drivers. 3. A GPS that continually displays the posted speed limit and the elevation.I didn't realize I also wanted these additional features that I did not know were available: 4. Collision avoidance warnings 5. Lane drifting warnings 6. Upcoming speed limit changes 7. Wrong direction on one-way street warning 8. Traffic in front of me has started moving alert 9. School zone alerts 10. Animal crossing, train crossing and other selectable alerts 11. The capacity to add a backup camera and/or a back seat kid cam. 12. Smart Phone integration. (I'm not sure what this means yet.....)I had been wondering why nobody had combined a GPS with a dash cam. Garmin did it and went a step further - they incorporated the capacity to add a backup camera, collision warning, lane drift warning and many more capabilities into one unit. Dang, I love this thing! What I have noted and appreciated is how easy it is to use the GPS. I'm still an old fashioned type-it-in guy, so I have not tried the voice commands. The unit is very quick and does pretty well at anticipating street names and addresses. The think works even out in the wilderness where there are no cell phone towers. I'm thrilled that the unit is not using any of my cherished smartphone data as I travel. I'm also pleased that I've got a full-time display that is not wearing down my smartphone battery.Even more, I find myself using the speed limit indicator...frequently. This unit notifies me when the speed limit drops and when I am approaching a school speed limit zone - both very helpful features. It also notifies me when traffic ahead of me at a stop light has started moving again. Kind of helpful for those occasions when I stop to check a message at a stop light. Also available are notifications of railroad and animal crossings. As a motorist who is at retirement age, I was particularly pleased about the collision warning feature and the lane drift warning. I need all of the technical help I can get. Both features work and I'm happy to have them on board. Frankly, if I still had young drivers in the house, I'd make one of these mandatory for their vehicles for the collision avoidance features as well as the trip data collection.I'm still excited about this product as a huge safety improvement for me until I purchase a vehicle that has everything built-in. I'm happy to know the dash cam is there. I would do it all over again!

Great deal for a GPS with a dashcam
Works very well. Was easy to install and update. The Garmin screen itself is nice and sharp and easy to see. The variety of driving alerts are reasonable and not too annoying. And if you really hate them, you can turn them off. Configuration is still an ongoing process. I really like my speed alerts to occur at 10 kph above the speed limit. I have yet to figure out how to do this with this particular unit. Videos look good, both in day and at night. I have yet to find out if videos with accidents or significant braking etc. are locked, which is a feature my other units did. I have tested it with some OpenSource maps for other countries, and it handles them just fine. It is always nice to have the option of using your own GPS when travelling to other countries.

wicked
Honestly I've been looking for a dash cam for some time and have returned three for not being at all decent. this one blows them away. works great at night and flawless during the day. plus it has a GPS. Free lifetime updates. the alerts all work amazing. honestly have no complaints at first It started lagging but the memory card I had put in was corrupted. put in another and it's back to tip top shape. It's a steep price but when you consider a decent dash cam and a gps it's what you would pay for decent ones of each but in one unit. It doesn't have sound but that wasn't a feature I wanted I tested out another dash cam that recorded sound and all you heard was the engine or the radio playing kind of pointless.

Muy buena compra
Este equipo reemplaza un Garmin 2597, pero el Drive assist es mas avanzado, el display se ve un poco mas pequeño pero es solo la impresión. Muy buena compra, entrega muy rapida

Overall excellent quality. NO SOUND Recording. 5' Power chord.
Overall as expected. The item is properly advertised, but did have *1* disappointment that was caused by my lack of diligence. While this version does have both voice control and audio feedback of routes, it does NOT record sound from the environment. Given how little space compressed 8k sound has compared to the actual highdef video, it's perplexing. If you read deep enough into the user manual etc it does say no sound is recorded. Not a deal breaker, but for those concerned with possibly wishing audio tracks for road rage encounters it would best to consider another version. Day & Night visual recordings are excellent. Note: Night recordings in general better with lesser headlight illumination. Power chord is approximately 5 feet, which is enough to route from anywhere on the windshield or dash directly to a console accessories outlet, it is not enough to route the power chord around the borders of the windshield and below the dash to the outlet. It would be nice to be able to order the power chord separately as there is a 15' (5m) Garmin power chord available as a separate purchase. (Garmin: it's much easier to hide excess cable than make extra suddenly appear)
