Great Gangster Film! Bogie and Edward G. team up again!
Edward G. Robinson plays a detective who goes undercover to try to take down a mob boss and their crime syndicate. Humphrey Bogart plays an evil gangster who does not trust Robinson from the start. This is a great film. I prefer to see Robinson as the gangster but here on the opposite side of the law he does a good job. It was a good movie for Robinson to show he could play a different role than the gangster but as fans that was the part we loved him in. Bogart was great in this part and it's a mystery why it took him so long to get past these supporting role gangster parts. Joan Blondell is in there too and is a great support and addition to the cast. This movie might not rank up with Key Largo or White Heat but it was a lot of fun. It had an awesome ending. The acting is top notch with Robinson and Bogart teamed together again. I recommend this to any true gangster movie fan or fan of Robinson and Bogart. Cheers

"Around this town the only reason friends pat you on the back is to find an easy place to break it."
In director William Keighley's BULLETS OR BALLOTS (1936), Eddie Robinson is a NYC detective who fakes being thrown off the force so he can infiltrate the local crime crime syndicate run by Barton MacLane.Humphrey Bogart practically steals the picture as trigger-happy Bugs Fenner, MacLane's underling. Unlike his boss, Bogie doesn't buy that Robinson is no longer a cop, but even if he's telling the truth, Bogie wants to go his own way in defiance of MacLane. After the boss is rubbed out (by guess who?), there's a power struggle between Robbie and Bogart. This development is a huge impediment to Robbie's plans of bringing down the mob.Robinson's character is based on real-life cop Johnny Broderick, MacLane's is inspired by Lucky Luciano, Bogart's a take on Dutch Schultz and matronly Louise Beavers is supposed to be Harlem's legendary "Madame Queen" St. Clair, creator of the numbers racket. Also with Joan Blondell, Frank McHugh, Joe King, Dick Purcell and George E. Stone.Currently rated 7.1 at IMDb.

Great 1930's Warner Bros. Gangster Flick!
Great 1930's Warner Bros. Gangster Flick! Edward G. Robinson,Humphrey Bogart,Joan Blondell,Barton Maclane & Frank McHugh. Great story about a tough police detective who runs rough on racketeers yet is fair to win the begrudging admiration of crime boss Bart Maclane. Robinson is fired from the police force and ends up working for Maclane which raises the ire of the Boss's number 2 man Bogie who never trusts a cop no matter what. A great movie and alot of special features plus Warner Night At The Movies and the Radio recreation of this movie. All in all if you love this genre you will definetly love this film.
