SeymourWE-30 10-Inch Grass/Weed Cutter

Takes some work but well worth it.
I actually bought two different grass whips because the price was reasonable. The longer metal shaft on this one makes it seem less sturdy that the other one I bought which was a few dollars more and had a longer wooden handle, but it also makes it lighter and maybe a little more efficient. My Dad had one when I was a kid and we use it for whacking weeds. That old one had a straight, flat blade, unlike the serrated blade on this new one. I don't really think the serrations help much, but my memory isn't all that reliable, so I'll leave it up to others to decide. Anyway, I used this out of the box without sharpening it at all. Other buyers are right: the blade IS painted, and sharpening will definitely make a difference, but I was able to knock down grass and weeds in my yard which had grown to well over seven inches with this thing. It definitely takes a lot of energy, but it's also a lot of fun, if you don't mind looking totally stupid golfing weeds and grass while the neighbor next door tools around on his riding mower. I don't mind and I'd buy it again. Once the grass is at a reasonable length I mow it with my push reel mower. Not a drop of gasoline spent. There is some pride in that.

Fun and dependable
Due to circumstances beyond our control, our yard got away from us. It was either get a grass whip or a goat so I ordered this, and I'm really glad I did!! It's simple to use, and dare I say it? a little fun! This is a great stress-reliever too! Our yard is slowly starting to look decent. We use the grass whip to get it down to a length so that we can attack it with a lawnmower. It's pretty scary to be near somebody else while they are using it, so watch out for pets and shins. I also feel a little more confidant when I'm using a whip than a weed-eater (which just frustrates me) that if I find a snake, I can just whack it with the grass whip, instead of throwing the weed-eater down and running away, screaming like a little girl. So far, so good- no snakes yet! It's lightweight so you can just fling it around to your heart's content, but if you're as out of shape as I am, you'll feel it the next day!It will not replace a lawnmower nor will it totally replace the weed-eater, if you're like us and have a lot of fencing. However, it's great to use on areas that you can't use a mower on.And unlike a goat, you don't have to feed it. Ever.

I admit trying it out for the first time after I'd mowed a large part of my yard (walk behind), so I was less than energetic. I've watched some videos that show you how to use it (well, I'm a city kid). I have an electric mower, a reel mower, and now this grass whip. I prefer to use my reel mower but it won't cut weeds. I'll be practicing with the whip to get the hang of it, and i think I may be retire the electric mower.New note: tried it first thing this morning and it's really ineffective, but I did get to work out some hostility whacking at the weeds and tall grass ;-)

for those of us who haven't a clue how to sharpen tools- Completely unwieldy- A sturdy weed whip should be rigid
Item arrived as is, not in a box, covered in tape that cannot be removed and with a bowed/bent handle- The handle is boingy and springy, not rigid- If the handle can't handle being shipped it isn't going to hold up being used as a garden tool- The blade is heavily painted, not sharpened -- which would cost an additional 20 dollars, for those of us who haven't a clue how to sharpen tools- Completely unwieldy- A sturdy weed whip should be rigid, like a golf club- To sum this item up: Junk -- with a capital J-

Great way to go green!
I've been purchasing items that don't run on electricity or gas. I'm familiar with the grass whip, because we used to own one when I was a child. Not only does it help keep your electricity and gas usage down, it is a very handy tool. If my kids need to work out their frustrations, they just take this out back and wack away at the weeds. This is also something that will give you good exercise. My kids like to pretend that they are golfing as well, which is really funny to watch. Now that I've got the weeds in the lawn cut down to size, it doesn't take as long to go back and wack the ones that start coming up again. It really is easy to use, you don't need any replacement parts, and it is a really geat way to go green! I'm very happy with this product and the affordable price.

it works ! Hard to find these !
When I was about ten years old my Uncle had a grass whip similar to this and that was the first one I ever saw. He was very meticulous about his house and his yard. My dad later got one and they were great for cutting tall grass, weeds. and other tall growth. These do not last forever as rust and heavy use takes its toll. Haven't seen one in years until now. One of the reviews says it is made in china (true) and it is not very sharp (true) . Despite lack of sharpening this works quite well. These are hard find and if I had it all to do again - I would buy another one. it has a heavy coat of paint so I decided not to sharpen mine and maybe it will last a while and not rust out. Its not sharp but it works! Hard item to find.

Keep it Green!
SEYMOUR WE-30 GRASS WHIP 45" DARK BLUE My husband always had an old-fashioned grass whip to use in place of the modern weed whackers. He's not Mr. Greenpeace, however; he just hates the noise of leaf blowers and weed whackers and prefers doing this fine-tuning on our landscape with non-motorized tools. Grass whips are hard to find in the average big box stores and garden centers -- this is exactly like the one he broke after umpteen years with one exception. He claims it is not quite as sharp as his old whip. The best arguments for the use of the Grass Whip? No noise, and no need to run to buy new string every other week for your weed whacker (or having a tough time finding parts and string for an older one!) It also doesn't hurt that they are inexpensive!
