With so many different 'interpretations' of the Ramayana and with so many misrepresentations in popular media, it is refreshing and enlightening to finally engage with the Critical Edition in an accessible, logical, and delightful way.The translation is not academic or hard to understand, like the Mahabharata by the same translator, informative footnotes provide clarity and explanation wherever there is the slightest doubt.Truly a masterpiece and a must-read for anyone interested in the 'original' Ramayana by Valmiki.Delivery was on time and without fault. Book condition was perfectly new. I ordered in April and got a March print.

If you want to read Valmiki Ramayana, as it is but in english, this must be the book you should buy. Fluid translations with occasional footnotes to give context and lore, this is the best english rendition. Salute to Vivek Debroy!Also, you may get hurt if you are reading it in a devotional sense. Lot of the things that Valmiki had written does go well with the current cultural understanding. But if you want to understand, embrace and experience the culturee and lifetime of a certain period in Indian Prehistory, you must read it.

Unbiased and clear. I have looked for a lot of translations but this one is by far the best. Everything is explained so well in the introduction. It is something that all us modern readers need. Must buy for anyone who wants to read this epic but doesn't know sanskrit.

You can pick a Book by Bibek Debroy blindly for its going to be great!He translates Sanskrit to English as it is.Of course, English as a language has its own shortcomings for that matter any language other than the one in which the text is originally written won't always be upto the mark but this is the closest translation of the Valmiki Ramayan in English.Coming to the parcel, I received the parcel with all it's seals on yet I discovered a slight greasy spill on the books as well as its cardboard holder. As long as the content wasn't destroyed, I am still okay with it.

If you are someone who just wants to know the story, then this isn't for you.But if you want to know everything about Ramyana then you can definitely go for it.
