Reading by the Colors: Overcoming Dyslexia and Other Reading Disabilities Through the Irlen Method

A whole book on selling a Method and no answers!!!
First thing, next day delivery was great but pity about the book.I have always had dyslexia and proud of it, but recently when I was describing an issue I was having in a room with fluorescent lights and how I was unable to read, let alone understand what I was reading it was mentioned to me that it might be scotopic sensitivity syndrome.I did notice that when I highlighted sentences on paper, I could read them better and I didn't see the patterns that usually surround a sentence. I was looking for new ways to be able to read without extra stress, as I do read quite alot and also to get a better understanding of scotopic sensitivity syndrome. So I got this book, hoping to find more answers and also to test myself. I found it was a sales pitch on this method and I should really get some filter lens and go to a professional. Baring in mind, I can barely wear my normal glasses, why on earth would I want another pair. This book is just full of people describing their problems which I related to and how this 'wonderful' method helped them but the book gives you no description it just gives a basic run down on what the expert will do. It's a 195 pages of what these learning difficulties do to people confident and how other people treat people with learning difficulties, like teachers that teach your children will just put your kids down for been stupid or dyslexic but if come to one of their centers they can fix it! I did not buy this book to be told how some people who do not understand learning difficulties treat people with learning difficulties. What is worse is this is an updated edition for 2005, it was first written in 1991, times have moved on and people are becoming more aware about how children learn in different ways, but I don't think this author realizes that. There is so much more information out there about learning difficulties on every level. This book is a joke! "Overcoming Dyslexia and other reading disabilities through the Irlen Method", there is not one page that has this! It did not help me over come anything it nicely repeated that there is no cure unless you use this method! Also the pages that are coloured for helping you understand the testing that they do in their centers are glossed which makes the light reflect off the page more, making it harder to read. I do not understand what was written on those pages. I had to use a colour filter which completely defeats the point of the coloured pages. This book is completely useless and depressing. I have always been very proud to be dyslexic, I am a very lucky person because I could use it to my advance and never been giving negative points from it from other people. If anyone wanting to understand more about learning difficulties this is not the book that will help them. I got more off wikipedia about scotopic sensitivity syndrome then out of this book. Complete waste of money, there is definitely better books on the subject that are not trying to sell you their treatment!

We have been trying to get my son help with his Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome for some 2 years, but at every turn felt we were fighting a battle. This book was an amazing help in understanding what is happening and how to help anyone with this disability.
