A Taste Of Time ( A Food History of Calcutta)

A good book trying to get out
I enjoyed this book a lot, but...It is an attempt at a cultural and culinary history of Calcutta, that fascinating, cosmopolitan, layered city, which has some of the best food on the planet. As a regular overseas visitor, drawn into the history, culture, geography, and of course the eclectic cuisines of Calcutta, I want to understand more. This book sets itself a challenging brief. It contains multitudes, but can be very frustrating to read: it is a bit disorganised, over-inclusive, sometimes repetitive and unnecessarily digressive. It contains many of the facts I want, but attempts at a synthesis are thin. The book would benefit from a sympathetic, expert, and very firm editor.
