Panasonic Perfection
The Panasonic SR-FE101-K rice cooker is a compact and efficient little machine that makes great rice every time. With its 5.5-cup capacity, it’s perfect for small to medium-sized households, and its sleek, modern design fits right in with just about any kitchen setup. It's also plug and play ready since the unit has a built-in converter and does not require a power adaptor for use in the United States. The power cord also is self-winding and only requires a gentle tug to retract into the base for easy storage. One of the best things about this cooker is the Microcomputer (Micom) technology that automatically adjusts the cooking time and temperature to get the best results. Whether you’re making white, brown, or mixed rice, it comes out perfectly every time with its induction heater (IH). Plus, the "quick-cook option" is a lifesaver when you’re hankering for a curry in a hurry, giving you a range of al dente to fluffy rice faster than you’d expect. What really stands out is the texture of the rice when done—it’s soft, pearly, and smooth, not grainy like with some other brands. After years of using Tiger and Zojirushi cookers, I have to say Panasonic has really nailed it with this one. The "Keep Warm function" keeps white rice at the perfect temperature for up to 12-24 hours, which is super convenient for meal prep or family dinners. I personally try to finish all the white rice or freeze leftover white rice before the 12 hour mark, as white rice begins to degrade, harden, and lose its nutritional value after that. Freeze leftover white rice while it is fresh in Ziploc bags and throw it in the microwave for a 1 to 1.5 minutes and it tastes great. Brown rice (Genmai or Genjimai) takes a but longer to cook, however, but it can keep in the warmer much longer. I've had cooked brown rice kept warm up to 72 hours with no noticeable change in taste or degradation in texture. It's convenient as a time saver that I can come home and have it as backup ready to eat with an entree if fish or chicken or some pickles and soup and not have to think of things to eat.The unit is also a breeze to clean with its removable, binchotan lined inner pan, and the controls are super easy to use. Careful to not scratch the inner pot to maintain the binchotan coating—don't place metal utensils or scratchy metallic scouring pads, only a soft sponge or cloth and hot water is required to clean up any residue.Another big plus is that this model is made in Japan and shipped directly from Japan, so you know you’re getting high-quality craftsmanship. It’s also nearly half-off MSRP, which is an amazing deal for something this well-made. I’m really hoping Panasonic brings more of their Japan-made appliances to the U.S. soon (like their line of refrigerators) as the market is saturated with problem laden appliances from the likes of LG (Daewoo), Hamilton Beach, and Kenmore. The only negative about the entire transaction is that the shipment takes about a week to traverse the world to the US since it's coming from Japan.Overall, the Panasonic SR-FE101-K is a great choice if you’re looking for an easy-to-use rice cooker that delivers consistently awesome results. It’s perfect for both beginners and seasoned cooks who want that premium quality rice at home.Note: The massive sticker with kanji characters on the front side is (thankfully) NOT included or affixed to the unit. This presumably was for Panasonic's online marketing purposes.
