The outside is blue, the actual ink is black.

Q: What kind of refills for these pens? does lrn5 refill fit these pens?

I believe you are right, as this is engraved as Pentel 05 LRN5 JAPAN on the side of the ink cartridge inside of the pen itself. I have not had to buy the refills yet, so not sure where to get them. Great pen. Ink can run if exposed to water though, so consider that.

Q: Is the black 0.5mm as smooth as the 0.7mm on plain paper or is it more scratchy? (Not cardstock/glossy as a scratchy pen can be smooth on thick paper)

The 0.7mm is the one to get for maximum smoothness without sacrificing too bold letters. Bigger than that comes closer to calligraphy, especially 1.00 The 0.5 is my favorite, you get the best definition and plenty good smoothness. Great for writing letters, logbooks etc. Get this if someone reads your writing.

Q: are the gel inks lightfast and archival?

I have had no problems with them. Very smooth writing. I am not sure about the archival aspect of it.
