Fine pencils--bogus advertising
These are fine mechanical pencils. Except for their color and the size of the lead, they are identical with other BIC mechanical pencils that I have and similar, though a bit lighter than other brands of mechanical pencils that I have. They all work well, and are comfortable to hold. By pressing on the top, you can move the lead down so that you can have plenty of lead, as it begins to wear. If you pull off the eraser, and turn the pencil upside down, you'll find two more pencil leads. It's pretty easy to insert them into the main barrel. Just press down on the top and hold it down. The barrel widens and you can slip in the lead. Once in, it holds in place pretty well. I doubt that the non-lead part of the pencil would hold up for more than the three included leads. What makes these particular BIC pencils worth buying? They contain 65% recycled plastic and their cardboard box is 100% recycled. So if you are ok with paying about 50% more per pencil than regular BIC mechanical pencils, you too can save the world. Could there, perhaps, be a better way? I think that if you're really serious about saving the world, you shouldn't be using throwaway plastic mechanical pencils in the first place--sooner or later they will all end up in landfills. Instead use a 100% recyclable wooden pencil--remember those?--or use one sturdy mechanical pencil and simply buy lead refills. BIC revolutionized the world by introducing cheap, throwaway ballpoints. Now it wants you to think you're revolutionized the world by using a throwaway pencil.Update: these work fine for me, but my 12 and 14 year old grandchildren were much harder on them and bits and pieces fell off quickly. For kids you need something more sturdy.

Great for students
I ordered these BIC ReVolutionXtra-Life Mechanical Pencils for our son who's in college and goes through his mechanical pencils like mad. I also wanted him to have extras to share because, if you've ever gone to college, you know having extra pencils on hand is almost a must. These are medium point or 0.7mm mechanical pencils. I love the vibrant colors of these pencils that are made with 65% recycled plastic. There are 24 pencils in each box. That will last our son approximately one semester in his highly math and science intensive astrophysics program where he goes through a lot of pencils and erasers. With one box of BIC pencils he can make it through one semester without the need to refill all of his pencil leads or erasers. Each of these BIC ReVolution Xtra-Life mechanical pencils pencil has three #2 leads that are 90 mm, or a little over 3.5 inches long. The erasers on these BIC pencils are the ones you want because they erase cleanly without leaving behind color or residue and they don't shed excessively. They're also refillable, like the leads. If you're in the market for school supplies or office supplies and you want incredibly high quality and affordable pencils, this is definitely a great option! Our son likes BIC pencils the best and these are quickly becoming his favorite because of the medium lead and high quality eraser.Very highly recommended!

Reliable basic mechanical pencils
These are great basic pencils--and there are so many of them! I like to use pencils with craft projects. With so many unfinished projects, it's nice to have a bunch of pencils, so I don't have to wonder where one is!Despite being made of recycled plastic, these are mostly similar in feel to other nonreusable mechanical pencils; the actual "lead" works as expected. One of my green pencils came with a bit of an odd coloration abnormality on the main section of the body, but it looks neat, and it would almost make them even more special if you could tell the plastic had been reused, with color variations, rather than the flat color that each one of these is. Anyway, these are nice, basic pencils, and this is a great set if you need them in bulk.

Basically the same pencil
If you're looking at this review you're likely familiar with these pencils. They've been around forever and for many are the entry into mechanical pencils. And for all that they're pretty good (even if I at this point prefer a Pentel). So what's different between these and your standard BIC pencil? Not much actually. There is a slight difference in the feel of the plastic body but shape- and function-wise they identical. The biggest difference is the earth tone colors that are used here and the fact that these use 65% recycled plastic (which is nice). So if you like the colors, and I think they're pretty good, and you like these pencils then really it's a color vs. price equation. Plus that recycled plastic is a bonus.

convenient, well-made pencils!
I really like that Bic has taken plastic out of their packaging and is making these products with more recycled materials. That is such a big plus.I use pencils for notetaking in books while reading. Sometimes I use post-its too, but I tend to like to write notes in the margins in pencil. These are nice and sharp, and write clearly. They are not "smudgy." To erase, you have to push the eraser a little hard from a 90 degree angle. I also love the bright colors -- thank you!
