Q: I would be grateful for info about the smoothness of the ef nib. that's my number 1 concern. is it scratchy.

This is really luck of the draw. Some will be scratchy and some won't. Some will have been smoothed so much that they have "baby bottom," and will thus skip and/or be hard-starting. If you can't work on the nib yourself, you should probably do one of two things. 1. Only buy very inexpensive pens that you won't mind discarding if they don't write well. Or 2. Only buy from a dealer that will ensure the pen writes well before shipping it to you. I own fountain pens that cost from a few dollars all the way up to hundreds of dollars. Greater than 90% of them required some work on the nib before they wrote properly, and price is no indicator of whether or not you will need to work on the nib. I've also helped people with some very expensive German fountain pens, well over US$1000, that didn't write properly out of the box.I do want to note that I'm not saying the Lamy 2000 isn't a good pen. It's really very nice, and Lamy makes good products.

Q: Is this pen broader or finer than a fine nibbed safari?

The EF fine point of the Lamy 2000, in my hands, is in between the Safari F and EF points. If i could attach a picture I would send you the results :) Side-by-side, you can definitely see the broader line of the EF Lamy 2000 vs any of my EF Safari's, but only slightly wider, not a huge difference.

Q: Does the piston knob turn without any resistance when you try to unscrew it? How does it work, does it take force to unscrew it or does it feel loose?

Turning the knob is easy. When it is all the way closed (after filling) it seems to have some friction against the body so it won't unscrew on its own. Feels pretty solid overall, been writing daily with it for over a year and no issues with the mechanism yet.
