Q: What is the circumference of the bamboo tier as shown in the picture? I have a container to put it in and want to make sure it is the correct size.

The container should not be any larger than half to an inch in diameter than the bamboo bundle. The depth of container really doesn't matter. Keep it out of direct light. Make sure and clean the wate and rinse the roots at least once a month.

Q: how many actually come in the set?

i got about 35, + or -, very nice, very happy with this company and they came fast and wrapped really well.

Q: Can these be planted in a backyard?

I would ask a florist or someone else who has already done this. I definitely would not plant one in a backyard because it is delicate to some extent.

Q: Want to separate the stalks for a group project, 1-2 stalks per vase. Can they stay in the packing gell for a bit? Best way to separate them?

I separate mine. They are perfectly fine to separate whenever you decide to do that. There is a good mixture of short, medium, & tall stalks. The packing gel should keep them hydrated enough if you need to travel or wait awhile to separate them.
