Q: Is there a big difference between the big Shot and the plus, width wise? It appears to be minimal according to the measurements.

Absolutely! You can put a whole sheet of cardstock through and unable to do that with the big shot, you can also cut more dies at a time if you are doing several for a card or scrapbooking

Q: Is the starter kit worth it? The big shot alone comes with the cutting pads and extended multi purpose platform

This was my first die cutting machine. I liked that I had some really nice dies - two different styles to use right away. I feel is was worth it. If you don't have any dies yet, I would say this would be the way to go. If you already have dies on hand, than maybe you would only want the machine itself. Hope this helps.

Q: as a beginner what will i need with this machine to start my work?

If you have the starter kit, you have all you need to get started. It comes with paper, dies, and pads. If you get the machine alone, then you would need to purchase some of these items. I would suggest that you look at you tube videos for additional help and tutorials. There are videos specific to this kit. I really love the machine. Hope this helps.
