Fabulous history of medicine book
I bought this book for my 11yo who is interested in medical devices. Now I’m reading it. Background: I work in medical research, so I know a fair amount about this topic area yet am not a physician. This book is GLORIOUS. Beautiful, informative, inclusive. It’s organized as a history of medicine and public health from ancient times to modern (see photos of table of contents). It’s inclusive of some areas beyond Europe in the history section, and it does include some women. Each chapter/time period starts with a DK timeline. The reference section is absolutely outstanding, with a two-page layout of each body system (see photo on sensory organs). In addition to glossary and index, there’s a “who’s who” section on people that both extra info and an index for historical figures.I am currently reading. Will eventually share with the 11yo, who will also love it.

An excellent book to display and read....
This book was recommended in an article on "coffee table" books to own. This was one of many of them listed. Since I have a personal interest in medicine, this was my first choice. It has been an excellent conversation piece every since. Rarely does a quest not pick up the book to read or discuss one of the topics inside. Personally I have found the book to be a fascinating read. Full of photographs and tables but narrative which concisely reviews the history of medicine. The book is large and has some weight but this is part of being a book placed on the table in front of your living room sofa. Nothing like the feel of a solid book in your hands in an era of e-books. Nice weighted pages and best of all content which will stimulate your mind and the those who will glance through it when they come to visit my home. Price was a bargain!

Visually arresting - but...
As usual, the publishers have assembled a vibrant, fascinating visual story - in this case, addressing the history of medicine. This is like reading a really well produced coffee table book, except the content is so well presented. But size of your display directly affects the book's usability. With a 12.9" tablet, the words are readable (with some straining).

2 page spread lauding Margaret Sanger
Very cool book. However, please note there is a 2 page spread applauding Margaret Sanger. I wouldn’t have purchased it if I had known.

Interesting exploration of history without focusing on the gore
At first, skimmed through the pages with trepidation thinking it may contain a bunch of gory images. However, the book gives an overview of the history of medicine focusing on the instruments, practices and advances without having to include disturbing pictures. A great addition to a library of reference books.

Highly recommended!
This was an excellent t overview of the history of medicine: as a book of lay interest, the ratio of illustrations to text was good. The pictures aligned well with the text and the text was an informative overview of the field. I would recommend this book to those wishing to learn more of medicine in general and it can take pride of place on any coffee table!
