Pizza industry has set the standards for on-time delivery across industries. For example, I have read about Cement companies that adopted the pizza delivery model as a key differentiator in a highly competitive commodity market. It all started in 1889, when a pizza was delivered in Italy to Queen Margherita. Even today, Pizza Margherita, is topped with tomato (red), mozzarella cheese (white) and fresh basil (green), inspired by the colours of the national flag of Italy.Pizza is now big business across the globe. Dominos is the story of the American dream, much like other global food and beverage brands like Coke, McDonald's, Pepsi, KFC and Starbucks. Humble beginnings, fire in the belly, entrepreneurial mindset, process excellence and hard work. There is a common theme in the success of these big brands that are ubiquitous with globalization. Once a Japanese child who landed in America with his parents, joyfully exclaimed ‘Dad, even these guys have McDonald's!’.This book is an inspirational business biography of Dominos and its founder Tom Monaghan. In many ways it is like other well written business biographies. The most important element (or additional topping on the fine pizza) is the technology perspective, explained well in Chapter 14: Becoming the ‘Tech company That Sells Pizza’. In my opinion, this topic deserves an exclusive book, to delve into the complexities of the global food and restaurant industry, and how new age technologies are disrupting these industries and creating new business models.For someone who loves pizza, this book is a treat. For those who don’t, they would certainly appreciate how the humble pizza has influenced and transformed global food value chains. Queen Margherita deserves ‘royalty’ on every pizza delivered, hot and fresh in every corner of the globe.Short and pithy, a weekend read that is both enjoyable and informative, with fungible processes and technological insights. In addition, it brings home the aroma of freshly baked pizza. Be forewarned that you might be tempted to order a Pizza (perhaps from Domino’s) by the time you complete this book. I certainly did!
