Great NAS drive!
Normally I buy WD red pro drives for my NAS, but this l drive is currently priced cheaper for reasons I don’t understand. Not complaining! It’s a solid, high spec enterprise grade drive with a no quibbles 5 year extended warranty. I had zero issues registering the drive.Used this drive to switch out a 10 year old 3TB WD Red in my Synology NAS. The SHR RAID rebuilt itself with no issues, and it is happily whirring away.I was concerned it might be a lot noisier than the REDs, but I haven’t noticed any real difference from the larger capacity RED Pro drives that I already have.10TB seems to be the cost/capacity sweet-spot right now. I’d definitely buy again next time I need to replace a drive

Good drives backed up with 5yr warranty
A little noisier than WD reds but they’re in a NAS in the server room (aka cupboard under the stairs) so not an issue at all.5yr warranty and got them at the same price as reds so very happy.

Gold medal to this HDD! 🥇
Great drive, WD know their stuff - much like the rest of the world, I went off Seagate a long time ago (they're probably decent enough now) but I've stuck with WD for years and, hopefully without jinxing it, they've been wonderfully reliable in my Unraid NAS setup 👍WD Golds have been somewhat good value for money - anything <=£200 for an 8TB unit is a steal in my opinion. Enterprise grade reliability and not too loud either - they're a little on the warm side but adequate cooling sorts that out.Highly recommended! I'm running a mixture of WD Reds & Golds in 3-8TB capacities and they're brilliant.

New life for two video-sound production hard drives (LaCie d2)
I'm a Mac user who does a lot of sound and video work, requiring fast, robust external hard drives that can handle constant data reads and writes, hour after hour, month after month.A couple of my 10-15-yr old La Cie "d2" drives were making odd little sceeches, throwing up bad blocks, requiring Disc Repair... the tell-tale signs of impending physical failure. I balked at the cost of new d2s, especially when my issue was with the old hard discs inside the enclosures. Furthermore, the old d2s were integrated into my production set-up, and I didn't want to replace all my long data leads, hubs, etc., right now, just because LaCie now favour different transfer protocols on all their pro drives.A bit of research suggested that the hard discs within the d2 enclosures were probably no better than good Western Digital or Seagate ones, so I bought two WD Gold hard discs for the less than the price of a single new d2 drive of equivalent capacity.I'm competent at tech repairs, but not a computer engineer. The d2 enclosures are solid metal, everything is screwed together (no plastic, sticky gunk or double-sided tape), and the boards and connection ports in mine were still in good condition. Swapping out two drives was a doddle, taking about 10-mins per unit, requiring nothing more complicated than a couple of slightly esoteric screwdriver heads. After two months of sound/music production the most-used WD Gold drive has been completely reliable inside the old LaCie enclosure: the whole thing is just like a brand new d2, in fact.

Go For Gold
First off these drives aren't cheap and probably not suitable for general users... They aren't even the fastest or quietest drives out there, but I do find them highly reliable and therefore in my use case top choice. I've gone through more hard drives then I can remember, but all my Western Digital Golds are still going strong and in some cases have move through three different computers. I don't even notices as many errors creeping in after three years as with other drives... From personal experience I find I'm pretty lucky if other makes/models of mechanical hard drives are still useable after three years.

Relatively fast, reliable, as described and not made by Seagate!
Relatively fast, reliable, as described and not made by Seagate!A bit noisy though - with audible clonking noises - not advised for where that might matter.Ignore the poor review on here from the guy that doesn't understand the difference between raw and formatted capacity. For reference 14TB manufacturer raw measurement = 12.73TB formatted without any file system overhead.

Very Noisy.
I've never heard a HDD which was anywhere near as noisy as this.Emits a loud hum and vibration at idle. But thats not the worst thing. The worst thing is the constant (every 5 seonds) loud click, so loud in fact, that it makes the entire PC shake!I've got hard drives that are 15 years old that don't make such a racket! Why this happens every 5 seconds was a mystery to me. And with no option supplied from WD to change the frequency, i returned this drive as potentially faulty.I've since found out (not an easy discovery) that this is a 'feature' on all current WD drives. PWL, preventative wear levelling, supposedly to lubricate the mechanism or some such.Amazon as ever were great and took it straight back.

Super fast and quiet for enterprise level HDD; "Clicking sound"
I'm a photographer and while I require a lot of storage space, I was also looking for speed - not SSD level but fast enough so that when I move my photos from my SD card or edit photos in Lightroom and scroll through hundreds and thousands of photos, they load at a more reasonable speed. With that, I originaly was going to go with an 8TB 2.5" SSD for around $650. But I struggled with spending that much and "only" getting 8TB considering I'd use that up in less than 2 years. So my other option was going with an old style spinners (HDDs) and search for the following: speed and reliability and it narrowed down to the WD Gold HDDs. I originally purchased a single drive but when I realized how fast and quiet it was, I purchased a second drive and decided to run them in a RAID 0 environment, and wow is it fast! While the single drive was pushing the read/write to around 250mbs, under RAID 0 with the two drives combined into a single volume, I am now getting slightly MORE than double the read/write speeds.Note: For anyone deciding on RAID 0 - keep in mind that if a single drive within your RAID 0 fail, both disks will fail since the data is distributed evenly across the multiple drives. With that said, have a proper backup system in place. For example, my setup is this: WD Gold RAID 0 as my primary, a separate desktop hard drive that backs up the primary, and then a cloud-based backup that backs up the back up of the primary.Update: There are a few folks that are complaining about a "clicking sound" that is heard about every 5 to 6 seconds. Please note that there is nothing wrong with the drives. This clicking sound is the result of a feature called “Preventive Wear Leveling” or "PWL". It’s a periodic head sweep to distribute lubricant and prevent wear in a particular place if lubricant were to build up in one spot. Keep in mind these are enterprise-level hard drives which mean they are supposed to last very very long. With that, there are some quirks like this PWL feature that are supposed to enhance reliability. Reliability is certainly a priority and I really do not want to purchase replacements in years to come so hearing a clicking sound every few seconds is not a big deal to me.

Great Drives at a Great Price Point, but LOUD!
The media could not be loaded. I bought 6 of these Western Digital 12TB Gold drives as replacements for 6 x 6TB Western Digital Red drives, as it was time to upgrade the size of my RAID 5 array and these Gold drives were one of the few on a list of compatible larger capacity drives for my now aging Synology 1813+ NAS.The WD Red drives served me very well, were quiet, and I had no complaints about them at all, so this was really a decision based solely on price (at the time of purchase, the 12TB Gold drives cost $229 each) and capacity. The equivalent Red drives were about $30-50 more a piece than the Golds at the time of purchase, so I went with the Golds. The conversion took about a week's time of removing a 6TB drive and letting it rebuild the array on the Gold drives (each Gold drive was formatted completely and then had a full SMART scan done on them, none of the 6 drives had any errors or defects). However, once I converted to having all 6 of the 12TB Golds in my array, I immediately noticed an uptick in the noise level, even during normal operation. The sound of these drives when they seek or perform any kind of scan and/or data scrubbing (all the drives generally aren't going unless data scrubbing or a full SMART scan is running) is much louder than the Reds. I expected an uptick in noise due to them being "Enterprise" (a.k.a. designed for a datacenter) and 7200RPM, but I was surprised at how audible the sound is. The attached video I took to give you an idea of the noise level. The amibiant sound can be ignored (fan hum and sound of a network switch) but the "cachunk"-ing you hear is all the seeking of the drives. I recorded it with my phone on top of the NAS directly in contact with it, and then from about a foot away from the NAS so you can get a sense of the sound. This was taken during normal operation (watching a video off the NAS from a single workstation). When it's doing data scrubbing you can hear my NAS from the hallway outside the room it sits in. Luckily it sits in an office and not in our bedroom or somewhere guests would normally be. However anyone who may have their NAS or server in their bedroom or near a workstation you use frequently would likely get annoyed by the constant sound of the seeking of these drives. If this sits in your basement or a closet somewhere, you'd probably have less of an issue of the sound. It also may be because I use a NAS rather than a server that might have more sound dampening built into it.Other than the noise, however, the performance of these drives is great. Not really a noticeable improvement over the Reds, but the price per TB and the extra warranty is awesome.I still highly recommend these drives, just be wary of the increased noise level, especially if you are moving from a non-Enterprise 5400/5900RPM drive to something like these.

Achat parfait
