Understand this is intended to be a low power version of the 4790
Writing this almost exclusively to respond to the reviewer who gave this one star. Understand what you are talking about before you post misleading reviews. Intel makes 4 versions of the Core i7-4790:Core i7-4790: Locked CPU, cannot be overclocked. 3.6GHz base clock, turbo up to 4.0GHzCore i7-4790K: Unlocked CPU, overclockable. 4.0GHz base clock, turbo up to 4.4GHzCore i7-4790T: Ultra low power CPU, cannot be overclocked. 2.7GHz base clock, turbo to 4.0GHzCore i7-4790S: This CPU. Low power, 3.2GHz base clock, turbo to 4.0GHz.Only buy the 4790S or 4790T if you are looking for a CPU that runs cooler and uses less power. There is no false advertising here - these are low power variants designed to run at a lower base clock but still achieving 4GHz with Turbo in certain circumstances. Now that we actually understand what this CPU is and what it is designed for, it is fantastic. With a cooler master Hyper 212 Evo air cooler, it does not go above 51*C under load. Lots of processing power with low heat and low power requirements. A great buy if that is what you're looking for. If you want all out performance, buy a 4790K.

quiet, cool and 4.0GHz when you need it
This is a fantastic processor for a quiet and cool HTPC. The onboard 4600 graphics are more than sufficient to provide great 1080p playback on my TV, which means you no wasted money on a discreet video card. The S variety of the i7 processors operate at a TDP of only 65W, so temperatures rarely get above 60°C while paired with a fanless Silverstone NT01-PRO cooler in my Silverstone GD05B case, even when my entertainment center doors are closed. Performance is amazing. This may be listed as a 3.2GHz processor but with the Intel Turbo technology it ramps up to 4.0GHz when you need it, like when transcoding videos. If you're building a gaming rig that's going to tax the processor for long periods of time and don't care about heat and fans, I'd probably go with the 4790K, but if you're going for low noise and low heat and want to have power available when you need it, this is a great choice.

Fast and cool. In my case it was for a Media PC/game build. I wanted to future proof as much as I could. Probably much more than needed for a Media PC but no regrets when we game on it. It's thermal footprint is low enough I could use a low profile cooler and still keep it in the 40's and it's fast enough to run everything I can throw at it. Of course I only got a 7.7 rating on the Windows Experience Index (limited by the CPU); with the i7-4790 overclocked I'm sure I could have acheived a 7.9 (at the time of the build the highest possible rating) but that wouldn't have worked for the smaller enclosure (SilverStone Grandia Series HTPC Case).

good balance of power and speed
I purchased 4 of the i7-4790S for mini-ITX office PCs. The 65 Watt TDP allows a smaller cooler and case at the cost of 11% lower base clock than the 84 Watt parts. That's a good trade for my application. If you're looking for better integrated graphics in a 65 Watt CPU consider the i7-5775C, which costs about $100 more and can be hard to find in stock. Or if you don't mind using a PCIe slot and another 25 Watts get a GT 730 / GDDR5 video card.

Might not be the chip you're looking for
It is advertised on here the site that the chip runs at 4.0Ghz. It's true that it can, but it is not the new intel chip coming out late June which defaults at that speed. That is the 4790K. This one defaults at 3.2Ghz according to the labeling on the chip itself, and on the box. For a better comparison go to intel's website to see more detailed specs before buying this chip to make sure it is the one that you want.

Non-gaming powerhouse.
I was looking for a compact non-gaming computer (like the i7 Brix) but wanted to use standard sized parts that can be upgraded, if necessary. I settled on this cpu and a fanless Morex 557 Universal Mini-ITX case with a 1U heat-sink. The computer runs completely silent unless running very cpu-intensive tasks. System is solid running Prime95 for extended periods of time. Goal accomplished.Associated components:* Morex 557 Universal Mini-ITX Case, Fan-less, Compact* Mini-Box picoPSU-160-XT High Power 24 Pin Mini-ITX Power Supply* 12A/144W AC to DC Switching Power Supply 110-240vAC to 12vDC PicoPSU Compatible* Dynatron T459 Low Profile Active Copper LGA1156 Intel Core i3/i5/i7 CPU Cooler* Asus Z97I-PLUS Motherboard* Kingston HyperX FURY 16GB Kit (2x8GB) 1866MHz DDR3 CL10 DIMM - Black (HX318C10FBK2/16)* Samsung Electronics 840 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Single Unit Version Internal Solid State Drive MZ-7TE250BW
