The Print (Ansel Adams Photography, 3)

Old and New.
Enjoyed the history of Ansel's process getting to a good b&w print, and all the elements he considered along the way. The importance of paper types and how different ones can bring out important qualities of a photo to take a photo to another level. Since I no longer do my own developing and printing, and instead use programs like Photoshop, keeping an eye on just what aspect and tonal range of a picture is still necessary. Also enjoyed seeing more of Ansel's photos.

Beautiful
If you long for the days when photography, real photography, was black and white on film, then you will love this book. Of commercial necessity it has been years since I maintained my own darkroom and printed my own prints . . but how I miss the magic! This book brings it all back and in so doing opens some new creative channels in my mind as to how to get beautiful prints in the digital age. If you're a purist, you will love this book. If you are a pragmatist you will find ways to correlate traditional methods to digital processing and printing (even though the book does not address the topic of digital at all.) If you are serious about b/w get this book then work with your own shots and in your own workflow until you can emulate the look of this master.

Classic
This is a standard reference/classic for any photographer. Our copy got damaged in a move, and we are replacing it.

I was in my early 20's when I first read this book and deeply regret not attending one Adams's Yosemite workshops. This book is a gem and methodically covers every aspect of the print making process. I bought it used at a bargain price because the original I had was lost in a nasty divorce.

A Masterwork, But for an Earlier Age
That Adams' "The Print" is a landmark in photographic processing instruction is indisputable. But while the visual objectives that Adams illustrates are as valid today as ever the bulk of this book is strictly for film printers. Digital photographers will go very hungry looking for any genuinely practical and useful tips here. For them, I recommend looking at the several excellent books on digital b&w printing that are available today. The best embody precisely the same visual objectives but present the solutions in terms of contemporary digital tools and techniques.

A must read photography book
A most informative and formative photography book from a Great Master, perhaps the most useful of the three Ansel Adams is most known for. All can benefit from the sensibility, creativity, technical expertise and professionalism of this great photographer.

Different than expected.
Bought all the books in the series by Ansel Adams. I found that being a digital camera guy, the perspective is a bit different. Have always enjoyed Ansel's work but the perspective is different. between film and digital. Good reading and full of techie info. Just different than I had pictured-pun intended. All this being said not bad information just a different perspective.

As New
The book and dust cover are in as new condition, even though the book is first addition from 1983. Excellent

Who wouldn't want their own darkroom after reading this book.
I purchased the trilogy of these books, The Camera, The Negative and The Print as I wished to reintroduce myself to the magic of film based photography. Ansel Adams was a formative photographer, he was also methodical, systematic and philosophical. If you enjoy detailed, clear and concise information combined with art then I think you will enjoy his approach. Yes, these books were written before the mass introduction of digital media, but knowing the roots of any subject is bound to produce insights and connections. Photography is about images, emotions and interpretation. You may consider little value in understanding something of different film types, papers and developers, but digital manipulation seeks to replicate these same effects with filters and settings and understanding the origins of the processes involved may enhance your understanding of where we are now. You never know you may even try using film again, you just need to slow down a bit, but that may not be a bad thing for any us, after all photography is about looking, really looking and seeing things others can't see.

Essential reading for anyone who uses a darkroom
This book about The Print is an essential manual for anyone who makes black and white prints in a darkroom. It delves into the science and practice of making prints, and discusses some of the artistic choices. It covers all aspects of print-making. However, this is definitely a technical book and might not be to everyone's taste. If you like this you should also buy The Camera and The Negative.
