Fantastic for thick carpet
We moved to a new house and had all the carpet replaced with mohawk smartstrand. It's a very thick, luxurious carpet which we enjoy however our existing Oreck vacuum cleaner, as much as we have enjoyed it at the old house, absolutely refused to move on the new carpet. We tried the Dyson Ball but it to refused to move on the new carpet and it was quite heavy. I ordered the Oreck magnesium, a bit hesitant based upon the price tag. However this vacuum is so good it's worth the money. It's extremely light and works on our thick carpet and wood floors like a dream. This is the only vacuum cleaner I know that will make you happy to do the chore.

Great Lightweight Vacuum- Warranty Service a Problem
So far, I love this lightweight vacuum. It's good at cleaning my carpets and hard floors with minimal effort on my part. As others have mentioned, I wish it had attachments. I love the long cord but wish it were attached at the top instead of the bottom of the vacuum as it tends to get in the way. A zippered outer bag holds the vacuum bag. It's working well but I'm concerned if the zipper breaks it would be a costly replacement.I'm adding to my past review after a few months of owning this vacuum. We had to send our Oreck to the repair shop within a few months of purchasing it. Unfortunately, there was no authorized service center in our area to honor our warranty. The repair shop we finally used told us that the Oreck brand was purchased a few years ago and finding warranty service was difficult if not impossible. We had to pay for an expensive repair out of our own pockets. Beware, the new "Oreck" may leave you with no warranty service.

Expensive piece of junk.
This is one of the most disappointing purchases I have made. I bought this vacuum a year ago and this is the original bag...why? Because every month I have to do this. I have to take apart every component of the vacuum and clean everything out and the bag stays completely empty, everything gets trapped in the suction hose (there’s only one) and never even makes it to the bag. It WOULD be a great vacuum but it has not worked for me from right out of the box.

Great Simple Vacuum
This vacuum is awesome!Positives:- Lightweight- Self propelled making it very easy to push- Very powerful- I have 2 dogs that shed a lot and it has never gotten clogged (this was a major problem with every bag less vac I've owned)- Long extension cord so you don't have to keep switching outlets in large areas- Comfortable handleNegatives:- Most vacuums have a hinge on the hook where the power cable wraps around so that you can quickly remove the entire power cable and plug it in. This one doesn't so you have to actually unwind it the entire way.- There's no height adjustment on the handle so the length is what it is.- The first one that I bought had the belt slide off it's track and the friction with the plastic cover melted the cover so that it no longer fit. I bought the first one from Costco who gave me my money back but no longer had the item available. But, I liked this vacuum so much that I took a chance and bought another one on Amazon.**Update - I have had this vacuum for about 3 years now and I still love it. It has held up great. With 2 dogs, I have had to clean out the hose that goes from the bottom up to the bag twice to get out pet hair. It still has awesome suction and my cleaning lady loves using it because it's so light. Best vacuum that I've ever owned, by far!

So far I love this thing
So far I love this thing. My previous vacuums have all been bagless, and while they would pick up dirt, I usually ended up having to use my fingers to pick it out of the stupid chamber, causing dust to get in my eyes and on my hands, ick! So my mother recommended I get an Oreck and use bags - I love it! This thing is so lightweight, it made vacuuming the stairs very easy.It does have a sensor that turns off the vacuum if it can't spin the brush. This scared me at first, I thought it was defective, but I read that its so if anything is stuck or the setting is too low (I think?), it turns off to prevent damage to the vacuum. So if you are on high carpet you have to keep it moving. I think that's a really good feature since this thing is not cheap.I also love that it comes with such a long warranty and several tune-ups included. It's nice that they back up their product like that. I highly recommend this vacuum, the carpet and hardwoods in my house look much better now!

Works on Shaw Caress carpet
Who knew that certain vacuums don't work on certain types of carpet?!! Not me, until we installed Shaw "Caress" carpeting all over our renovated farm house, and found that our expensive, new Dyson wouldn't work. After trying several of the vacuums suggested by the Shaw website, we purchased this Oreck, and the search is over! It is exceptionally light, almost feels like a toy, in fact. But, it certainly does a great job on our carpet, and it's not painful to take it up the staircase, either. The cons: it doesn't have attachments (using our expensive, new Dyson for that LoL), and you have to change/buy bags. Glad we made this purchase, and I would recommend this vacuum to anyone who makes the mistake of installing Shaw "Caress" carpeting.

The *BEST vacuum
I work at a hostel - can you imagine how much Vacuuming there is? We've tried a boat load of different vacuums. We wanted something POWERFUL, yet easy to get around with. We've tried the back pack vacuums, but there isn't a single brand that makes them right, so that the top wouldn't spin off with all of the swiveling the person would do. If that's not it, the bottom attachment for carpets would be unbalancing very heavy. While backpack vacuum seems convenient, and some of them are powerful, they are impossible to use in tight corners, or UNDER stuff, as now you're doing a full squat with a semi-heavy vacuum, once it's not properly on the back. So clearly, we need something POWERFUL and LIGHTWEIGHT. Well this is a quality Oreck - very powerful through their straight forward design. It is also the lightest vacuum probably on the market. Due to it being on the ground, it makes it a breeze to get under beds, and around/under various items/appliances, etc. Stick with bag vacuums only, as bag less means you would be cleaning the entire unit quite often.

Buyer Beware
This is my second Oreck in 6 months. The first Oreck picked up a small bolt and it hit something metal and quit. Nothing I could do and I tried everything. I phoned Oreck Canada as Amazon's 30 day warranty was past, and could not get anything but a busy signal. I tried calling various times of the day for about a week and got nothing but a busy signal. I contacted Oreck in the U.S. and, although I got through to them, they were totally unhelpful. Finally I contacted Amazon and to my amazement they were willing to replace the Oreck for me (more companies should be so compliant). My second Oreck has been used for about two months and I have been EXTREMELY careful what goes in the vacuum. Mostly it is pet hair. In spite of my precautions it jammed in the elbow next to the power head. This machine is very difficult to dismantle in order to find the problem (and just as difficult to reassemble). You must have strong hands. I finally got it apart and found a small twist tie blocking the tube. When this vacuum is in good working order, it has excellent suction and is very light and easy to operate. However, it is a very sensitive machine and I therefore have to rate it quite poorly. As far as Oreck Canada goes, there is no rating low enough for this company.
