Released in March 1987, U2's the Joshua Tree quickly became the fastest-selling album in British chart history, selling almost 250,000 copies within the first week of release. In the US, it was equally successful, topping the Billboard album chart for nine weeks, spending 58 weeks in the Top 40 there and earning a Grammy Award for Album of the Year. The Joshua Tree gave birth to several major hit singles including with Or Without You and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, both of which reached Number 1 on the Billboard Top 100 in the US, and Where the Streets Have No Name. The story of the making of the Joshua Tree is told here, via interview and archive film footage, with contributions from band members Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen. U2's long-time manager Paul McGuinness reveals how the album catapulted the band into the category of rock superstars, and there are contributions from Elvis Costello in the role of a major U2 fan, re-mix producer Steve Lillywhite, and of course co-producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois. Packed with reminiscences and powerful performances, this is the story of one of the most famous and best records of the Eighties, a true Classic.

Things that would make it better: discuss every song
The only problems with this documentary is that it isn't long enough and it isn't in HD. Very enjoyable to watch if you are a fan of The Joshua Tree. Things that would make it better: discuss every song, more Larry, and could use more audio\video and interview footage from the time the album was recorded. Most of the footage is from circa 2002 and features the producers and band reminiscing about the recording sessions. It would be cool to have some footage of the band talking about what they think the album means to pop culture during the recording and how they anticipate it will be received by their fans and critics while they were recording it, instead of only hearing them speak years later, after the legacy of the album has already been established. I wish they would have spent some time on "One Tree Hill," "Trip through your Wires," "Redhill Mining Town," and "In God's Country." Those songs are pretty much completely neglected. The footage with the Edge playing along to the raw tracks is pretty fun to watch, as is the personal dynamic between Bono and Daniel Lanois as they talk about the album over the mixing board.Overall, very fun for a U2 fan and worth the purchase. Also has good replay value. I have enjoyed watching this multiple times because watching it with a first time viewer prompts conversation and excitement and makes repeat watching as fun as the first time.

A look back into a great album
This is a DVD which is certainly not for the average U2 fan. First of all, you won't find any live footage or music videos from the album (except for The Sweetest Thing, but although the song was written back in '87, the video wasn't released till '98). Then, you will find the documentary doesn't really focus on the writing of the songs, but rather on the creative process in the studio, how the mixing was done and how the songs came to sound the way they do. This may not be the most romantic part of making an album, but as you'll see on this DVD, it is a really interesting and very demanding process, for both the artists and the engineers. The analysis goes track by track (although, as some have noted, there are some tracks missing), and it's done predominantly by Daniel Lanois, with input from Pop-era band members.U2 fans and music aficionados alike will be pleasantly surprised at how insightful this seemingly boring documentary can be. I wished they made a follow up on some of their latter albums. As for people looking for live footage or music videos for U2's The Joshua Tree, I recommend looking into the feature film Rattle & Hum and the Best of 1980-1990 compilation.

Much Better Than I Anticipated
I was little apprehensive buying this DVD sight unseen. I was afraid that this was going to be a collection of videos from the "Joshua Tree" album, with perhaps some stock footage thrown in to make it look like a documentary. I was pleasantly surprised. The producers sat down recently (probably while making the new U2 album) with U2, Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois, and Flood and discussed in detail all that went into making this album. Bono and Lanois even play back the master tapes to show instumentations and vocals that weren't included in the final mix. The Edge also breaks down the master for "Where the Streets Have No Name" and discusses how the song evolved, and shows all of the different guitar parts included in the final mix. I found the whole DVD fascinating.I only wish that it had lasted longer (60 minutes). My hope is that maybe some of the magic that went into the production of "The Joshua Tree" will find it's way onto the new album...

A better-than-expected behind-the-scenes documentary
I like DVD extras. I like shows about how things are made. I like to know what goes into making a work of art, a building, a city, a ship. This DVD is along those lines. It's a very good behind-the-scenes of an iconic 1980s album from one of the most important bands (love 'em or hate 'em) of our time. Surprises include how many layers each song has, how insecure Bono clearly is, and how opportunistic these artists have to be to capture lightning in a bottle. The personalities of Eno, Lanois, Edge, Larry, Bono, and Adam are on full display, as well. An enjoyable hour that will help you appreciate "The Joshua Tree" -- and other albums from other artists -- in an entirely different way.

It is not bad
I'm really a fan. I've seen the band's (r)evolution. This DVD is a good one because you hear each member of the band, and they have something interesting to tell, apart of sing and play. The band tells stories about the Yoshua Tree album, and give a sort of examples of how they reach the instrument's sound, or what inspired them to writte lirycs and music, all of this is good, but the DVD doesn't let you hear a complete song!!! And this is a shame. Furthermore, the discography is just a bad list (without images, nor included songs). Buy this DVD taking into acount you aren't going to haear a complete song, the content is just a sort of interview.

Could have been better
This DVD offers interesting insight into the music construction process. Your guide for a substantial part of the tour is producer Daniel Lanois, whose influence on Joshua Tree clearly helped make the album possibly the best rock and roll album ever. But the overall review is not comprehensive, focusing on three songs and neglecting in-depth discussion of the rest. While the band features prominently in the beginning of the movie, towards the end it appears as if they drifted off, and the album is not sufficiently dissected to allow insight into the thought processes behind the music. That of course may be intentional, or it may be that there wasn't much thought behind the music, but the overall effect of the film's short length and awkward ending is to remind us of the need to balance the creativity of the band with the discipline of a good producer.

Good find for U2 fans
Being a long time fans of U2, we found the DVD interesting and enjoyable. I recommend it for others that would like hearing a mix of insightful dialog from the creators of the Joshua Tree album which included not just the band but in no small part the producers as well as some classic videos.
