Diameter = 5" approxTier height = 1-3/4" approx for bottom 3 tiers (interior height as the tiers nest into each other), 2" approx for top tier.

Does this tiffin come with separator plates that serve as lids for the bottom three tiers?

No. The tiers serve as the lids for the subsequesnt tiers. The only one with a lid, is the top tier.

Are these suitable to use in a coal mine? I'm looking for a dinner bucket that's styled like the type used by old time miners.

I haven’t even used mine yet. But it seems as though it would be an effective lunch container in a coal mine.

How does it handle liquids such as soups? Does it leak? Does it leak if set on its side?

I'd skip using it for soups. It doesn't have any kind of suction so it does slowly leak a little. It's good with thicker liquids/broths though.
