A real treat for the warship enthusiast
This book is an example of a rising tide of works dealing with military hardware illustrated by commercial CAD (computer aided drawing/design) software programs. Poland seems to be the leader of this trend with publishers like Trojca, AJ Press, and now Kagero has jumped in.CAD software programs allow one to model vehicles, aircraft, ship, spacecraft or anything in the tiniest detail in full color. The lighting can be set at any angle and any intensity. Once the model is complete one can print out gorgeous shots from any angle or distance desired. The results are really stunning. So stunning in fact one is tempted to wonder how much of the detail is from primary reference material and how much is filled in from the draftsman's imagination. This would have been nice to know. It would have also been nice to know what software package was used (ProEngineer?). The results reflect great credit on some software vender. The book itself is 60 pages including the card covers which are included in the page numbering. The size is European A4 standard (8-1/4" x 11-3/4"). The bulk of the pages are given over to the CAD drawings of course. There are a few pages at the front that provide a design and development history, a detailed description, and operational history. It should be noted that the ship is illustrated only as it appeared at the time of sinking - November 1944. There are also 3 fold out sheets. One contains more CAD drawings and the other two conventional line drawings.Complaints are very few. One could have wished for some views of the aircraft carried. There is only one distant view of an E13A on the catapult. Also the objects that are described as "medium caliber gun directors" (implying that they control the 6" guns) are actually anti-aircraft directors that control the 5" guns. The rangefinders mounted on the platform above the conning tower presumably are associated with the 6" guns but they are not identified in the captions. But these are nitpicks. This is a really superb series. The next volume covers the British battlecruiser Repulse and I'm looking forward to it.

Precisely what any good modeler needs to build the HIMJS Kongo.
