Root Mushroom Farm-Shiitake Grow Kit

Super pleased watching my shiitakes form. Even though I knew you were supposed to deal with this immediately, I still left in the box for a couple days. Then read the insert and moved it to the fridge for a few days before I finally started following the instructions. By the time I got it out of the box, it already had nice white coverage and some bitty nubbies popping up. I soaked it for a little over two hours (which was the most challenging part of this due to the engineering required). I had bought a plastic bin from a big blue and yellow box store (~$9) in preparation. We taped a brining bag to the inside of that (filled about half of the bin), then added water. Braced that with a 9x13” baking pan and a cutting board. Then needed to weight it somehow. Got a mini baking pan, put a towel on it, and then added a brick. Tried to mostly prop that on the surface (but it did turn a little sideways and get a bit wet). (Like I said, there was some engineering!) I was trying to figure out how to support the log so it wasn’t just on the bottom of the bin, and the bottom of a deck rail planter (flower pot) that I already had worked well. Our house ambient is around 65°/42% humidity. I kept the bin pretty humid (condensation formed on the underside of the lid). I tried to space the edges a bit so it could still breathe, but I’m not sure how effective that was. We have cats, and they would absolutely have tried to chew the plastic bag. By the next morning I think, I had a nice row of mushrooms popping up with some other stragglers. It’s been about a week since the fridge bath, and I think I will harvest tomorrow. Very pleased! Update: Harvested a total of 1 lb, 6-7oz (and left some smaller ones unharvested). Sadly as a novice, I’m not sure how best to promote more flushes while also taking care of the log.

This shipped out fast, and I received it within a few days. Then, I put it aside for a week because life happened. This grew on its own without me doing anything. I'll try a second grow soon on it. Very highly recommended.

As advertised. Fun, easy to do and produced tasty mushrooms. I followed the simple instructions and the mushrooms started growing right away. I started on Saturday when I received them and was eating them by Friday. I would give 5 stars but as you can see in the pic part of the log didn't actually produce on the first flush. I am awaiting the drying process so I can re-soak and try for a second. I would happily purchase again.

I highly recommend this shiitake mushroom log. It started growing mushrooms before it was done soaking in a cold bath. Great first harvest. I am working on my second flush now. Shipping was super fast, so be ready to grow shiitake mushrooms right away.

I bought this for my Dad for his birthday. I was very hesitant because of mixed reviews and afraid to gift him a log that potentially would only be a log if nothing grew. HOWEVER, I was pleasantly surprised! Not only did he love it, I'm pretty sure this was his favorite gift I have ever gotten him in 32 years! I tried to find the pictures on my phone to go with this post but not having luck right now. 4 days into growing the growth was pretty substantial. After about a week he was able to harvest and got a TON of mushrooms, some were half the size of his hand! He sauteed them in butter and garlic and ate with fresh garlic chives and said they were DELICIOUS. I'm not sure if he ever tried to a second harvest, but he loved the first one. This was for sure worth the cost and a great present!! He's pretty in to cooking and gardening so this was prefect.

I bought three of these with mixed results. We all eventually got one harvest out of them, but you're supposed to get three batches, and only one of us did. And it was only 5 mushrooms at that. It also comes in a plain brown cardboard box with no fanfare of what it is. You have to look for the instructions, which were found under a layer of paper to protect it, but it could be easy to miss. And the instructions themselves are the bare minimum of information, printed in poor English and it looks like it came from a copier from the 1970s. It was fun, but keep expectations low.

I have bought many other company's mushroom kits, and NEVER have I seen one grow this robustly, beautifully and quickly. It is so easy to use... just soak in cold water, set up on a tray with the bag over it, and mist twice a day. I put a bag dryer between the two logs I bought to keep the bags off of the surface of the mushrooms and look at it now! The instructions say you can probably start harvesting between 7 and 14 days, but this is only five days growth. I'm going to make a wonderful cream of mushroom soup for dinner tonight, and there is enough out of this first growth to share with friends too. I will undoubtedly be trying other kits by this company too. Hope you love yours as much as I love this one! I
