No amount of twisting in any direction unlocks it as shown in the picture and described on the directions.** A: This bar has the same mechanism as any telescopic handle. Just twist the bar counter clockwise holding it by the opposite ends an it will unlock. Twisting it clockwise will lock it at the current length. **Q: Is there a weight rating for this bar? I need one that can be loaded pretty heavily!** A: I haven't been able to find one on Amazon or the Bell website, however I have loaded it up a little better then halfway full of clothes, for extended periods and didn't have issues. Some have complained about the plastic hooks (on the bar) breaking but that hasn't been my experience at all. I would say you are safe if you have the hooks in your car as you will use the metal rings to suspend the bar. If you have only handles to hang the bar from (like me) then you will use the plastic hooks on the bar to suspend it and that is when others have complained. Again I haven't shared that experience. I purchased this and went to install only to realize I didn't have hooks so I was forced to use the plastic hooks on the bar. I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous about it it breaking, because I was. I purchased it on July 7th and the day it arrived I installed it. I have about 15 pieces of clothing on the bar and have since the install. The plastic hooks haven't given way and my clothes are still hanging great. I went on vacation for a week, leaving my car parked in a driveway uncovered with external temps that had reached 90 degrees that week, internal temps certainly rose well above that. When I returned it was still in place with my clothes still hanging. I travel about 500 miles each week, returning to my home on the weekends and living out of hotels during the week. This bar has stood up to everything. The rubber sleeve on the bar keeps my clothes from sliding around even when I take a corner too sharp. I couldn't be happier after nearly a month of continual use. In case you are wondering I drive a 2013 Chevy Impala and it fits great! If this things gives way I'll update the review but for now it is going strong and for under 10 bucks I couldn't be more pleased.*** UPDATE OCT 2014 ***over 3 months ago I purchased this and day one it went into my 2013 Chevy Impala hanging from the plastic hooks (so many said the hooks are the weak link and break). I'm happy to report that the bar is STILL in my car (I have yet to take it down), still holding about 8 pairs of pants and 10 shirts. No signs that the plastic hooks are going to break, no issues at all. My experience has been VERY GOOD. I have no issues and frankly for the price I certainly recommend this product.
