This is how Arabic is being taught on US University Campuses
In the late 60's the 18-or-so Universities which taught Arabic used "The University of Michigan" Course in Standard Arabic, Newspaper Arabic, in second year Arabic, and, in the summer, would have a course in one of the Arabic dialects--I was lucky and had Mukhtar Ani and Khalil Hawi teaching me Damascene Arabic with his (Damascene Arabic, by Mukhtar Ani and the Georgetown crew of Professors) book and Rice and Said's book, Levantine Arabic, which is still in print on Amazon. By learning to speak, we started to become more fluent in reading. This new method, Al-Kitaab fii Ta'allum al-'Arabiyya, by Kristen Brustad and the crew at Georgetown, introduces the written Arabic in each lesson, --the DVD is well made and has the characters in the book speaking "classical," or, "written" Arabic--and then, also, later, at the end of each lesson, does some of the "colloquial" or "spoken" Arabic. Thus, the method bridges the gap between the "written" and "colloquial" Arabic.I haven't perused this particular "Book 3," but I'm sure it is just as good as "Book 1"

Great Series for learning Arabic
As a student learning Arabic, this series is the best way to go. The third book mostly just presents new vocabulary. It refines some grammar knowledge and provides insight on literary styles, but its main goal is to introduce lots of words and have the student use them. Because of this, the vocab lists in this book are massive, so it helped me to make flashcards to learn them all.

Great for learning Arabic grammar
This book is great at instructing grammar, but after 12 semesters of Arabic instruction, it seemed like the outside materials I used were more beneficial for vocabulary...

Perfect.
It was in fantastic condition, and came very quickly. The transaction could not have gone more smoothly. I was very happy to continue with the Al-Kitaab series!

Good for serious students.. otherwise boring and difficult
Al Kitaab series are boring and very difficult to study by oneself. Nevertheless they are great for the serious student. They are not of much help with day-to-day conversations though.didn't help me much but wasted too much time on it.. until i found Pimsleur Eastern Arabic Course and 'A Course in Levantine Arabic'.
