It is amazing how resilient this boy is

*by C***L on Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2014*

This a really hard read about an emotionally unstable mother who abandons her son many times, even though he is just three years old she puts him on a truck, not knowing where he is going, and watches as he disappears from her. Because of tensions in the father's family, which is a wealthy Eritrean family, she is not offered help to raise him, and only anger and rejection because she accuses their son of raping him, and the resulting little boy, and they are cruel to her anytime she asks them to taker her, and then also cruel to him once they do take him into their home. Also, she gives him to his father, who also does not want him, since now he has a dysfunctional family of his own by this time, and all the cruel ways his father tries to dispose of him. It is amazing how resilient this boy is, almost to the point of making you wonder if all this is true. Then, on top of all this, he finally escapes from Ethiopia by his same use of trickery he has used to survive so far, but ends up in a Japanese jail with no hope of getting out, and where he is treated there cruely also, but finally after many years is released and he tries to build a life there and befriends a church group who offer to help him, but the Japanese system is so unforgiving, that eventually he ends up back in prison a second time, and now they treat him even worse than they did the second time. When you are thinking how could anything worse happen to this guy, something else comes along and you are left wondering how can anybody survive all of this, most of us would have capitulated much earlier, but this guy just keeps bouncing back each time he is knocked down. He finally ends up in Australia and marries the woman he met in Japan who had ultimately got him released, and are now living happily ever after in Australia. On top of all this, he actually invites his mother to come visit him in Australia, and she does come. If you are interested in the Ethiopian/Eritrean enduring conflicts of years and years of war with death and destruction of so much land and people, and how the ones that do survive are affected by it, then this book is for you, but it will tear at your heartstrings, or if you are interested in the ability of one to survive against all unbearable odds, and still come out relatively unscathed, this one is for you too. Once I started it I could not put it down.

    easy going and descent doctor

*by M***A on Reviewed in the United States on May 4, 2014*

May be Dr. Solomon is incomplete with out the little Hitler within him, but is he different from the rest Eritrean fathers? I don't think so. I remember him as a competent, humane, easy going and descent doctor; off-course, if someone is craving for MOWES, he overact or acts wild. Yet, this is a very interesting book that might motivate many young Eritreans, if not Africans, to write their true stories. Remember, "Fetiki Selieki Ane Eye Adeki" Fetika Selieka Solomon Eyu Aboka; and the prove is you haven't even changed your last name yet. I just wanted to say, I hated the title of the book.

Why refugees are good for Australia

*by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on June 5, 2017*

We met Teddy at his Gojo Ethiopian restaurant and loved the food he made and his amazingly upbeat personality. Had to get his book. When you read of the Kafka like time he has lived through you have to stop and think about the resilience of the human spirit. Here he is now, a wise and compassionate human being. Anyone who is against Australia taking more refugees should read this book. It is a testament to redemption and a forceful argument for what Australia gains from refugees.Sue Gough
