I'd originally purchased a tiny filter that is made for the pump, but when you get near the end of the barrels, it gunks up quickly. I put this filter (40) before the tiny filter and it does a great job! The tiny filter has had nothing in it since I installed this one between it and the rain barrels. Word of caution though! That Oring is easy to lose! Without it the filter leaks and my pump wouldn't work, so you absolutely need that o-ring. Hang on to the extra one that comes in the package. Great customer service as well. I lost my o ring and can't find the extra and the company set me right very quickly!
