Must read for English aficionados
A good book on history of English, usage, pronunciation. Some of the anecdotes narrated are interesting. It is English demystified.

Good Buy
one of the best & most informative books on English language. Clear style.Must for all alike ...Only thing i could not understand was absence of names like F T Wood and Herndon from the Reading List.

Bill Bryson and his books.
This book is good to read. After Bryson's "A short history of nearly everything....." , this book came in line. I feel everyone should read this to know where one stands in English. Easy style.Chandrasekharan

Good enough
Interesting read but I never realized what a staunch Anglophile Bill Bryson is. The biggest disappointment in the book (and author, too) was when he called the colonizers of America "new natives". Also, I was hoping for a little more etymology.
