Great E-tool even without the Gimmicks
It is expensive, and if you're just looking for a folding shovel it probably isn't worth the money. But all of the other features on this tool make it something more than just a shovel. Its primary functions are as a shovel, a pick, a saw, a hatchet, and of course a grappling hook (ok.. that one may not be legit, but it has a lock position for it).I used the shovel / pick function to dig out some very rocky soil to set down a metal frame. It worked as well as any short shovel would have. the sharpened edge really helped to get under the rocks as opposed to just hitting them and stopping.I had a small tree limb come down on a road that I was traveling and was not able to pass. The only thing I had in my trunk at the time was my CWS. I got to test the saw and hatchet on the limb. It was about 5 inches thick with some offshoots that were 3 inches thick. The hatchet worked pretty well to chop the thinner offshoots, and to start a notch to cut the larger one with the saw. It wasn't fast, and neither feature worked as well as a dedicated tool, but they did get the job done. After my limited use, the shovel is still in excellent condition. No nicks in the edges, and the finish was still in almost new condition. The locking mechanism is very sturdy, the handle is light but strong, and none of the extra functions get in the way of using it as a shovel....and then....On my way back home after the dispaching the limb blocking my path, I was set upon by a band of ninjas. I tried fending them off using the shield function, but they were simply too much for me. I set the shovel to grappling hook mode and escaped. I found an abandoned boat with no motor or oars. The ninjas were quickly making their way toward me, so I set off on the boat. Ninjas can't cross water, so I was safe for now.Adrift for several hours, I saw another ship. I thought that my salvation had arived, so I used my trusty shovel to paddle to the the new ship. That was about when they saw me... and I saw the black flag they were flying. Out of the frying pan, into the pirates. I couldn't possibly paddle quick enough to escape, at least not with only one shovel, as the priates had a strong headwind.I took stock of what I had and set to work. I used the shovel to pry some of the planks from the boat up, the edge of the hatchet to cut my shirt into 2 pieces, and the hammer to assemble them into a sail. I bought some time, but not enough. With the pirates catching up, and the ninjas still on the beach, I had only one option. I used my shovel as a rudder for my small craft and steered straight at the ninjas. It was a risky move, but it was my only option. Ninjas and pirates are mortal enemies. My plan worked - The pirates saw the ninjas and attacked. Both had forgotten about me becasue of the impending battle. When the pirates went on shore, I steered my dingy to the side of their ship and grappled up.I set sail for my new life at sea. The wire cutter function allowed me to get into the cage that contained all of the pirates supplies. I used the bottle opener to open a bottle of pirate ale, the can opener to open the rations. Once I was fed, I realized that the ninjas had significantly damaged the ship. The wrench functions were all I needed to repair most of the ship.Utilizing the ruler function, I ploted a course to a port with free WIFI. Going to an unknown port was a risk, but I needed to share my story about the Wonder Shovel.I see that there is a small island on the pirate map that appears to be uninhabited. One of the pirates journals refers to it as zombie island. If I discover any more uses for the shovel when I get to the Island, I will try to come back to port to post them.If I could give this shovel 6 stars, I would.

Chinese Military Shovel
This is an awesome tool, I really like mine and have been beating it well. I have heard and seen on youtube that the handle can some times break easily at the point were it joins the neck, but mine seems to be solid. I will eventually modify mine with a steel handle but that is the only negative thing I can say about this shovel. Is it worth the price? The quality, durability of the steel, the axe/shovel, and heavy duty wirecutter make it worth it to me.

Great little shovel, worthy of a name.
I won't go over the basics, they've already been covered. The only thing I was [am] very disappointed with was [is] the instructions.THE INSTRUCTIONS ARE WRITTEN IN CHINESE!!! I'm sorry, but with all the things that we, in The Western World, have had made in China, you would think that someone in the supply chain would have included a set of instructions in at least one other language, like maybe, I don't know, French. Maybe German or Russian (although this shovel would probably cost a year's wages in Russian rubles). Maybe if China would contract to have this piece of Chinese military equipment made in the US of A it would cost less and would come with intructions written in every known language-- including Klingon. If it weren't for the pictures (very artistic) I would never have figured out the shield option.Seriously, for the money, it should come with a set of instructions that at least included English. People in most countries can at least read enough English to follow basic instructions-- even Klingons know English. But I do really love this little shovel. It's worthy of a name. I think I'll call it...Sing, and keep it in my toolbox with my other smaller-version tools, like my very short sledge hammer I call Poncho and my short, piranha toothed saw I call Sharky.

Neat little shovel
How much can you say about a shovel? Quite a bit, actually.I'm a big fan of shovels. I consider them to be one of mankind's greatest inventions. Drop me off on a deserted island with only one tool, it would probably be a shovel, and hopefully this one. Some of the features on this shovel may seem gimmicky, but they all work surprisingly well.1. It functions well enough as a shovel. No, you won't dig the panama canal with it, but you can still excavate quite a bit of dirt. Angle the head perpendicular to the handle and you've got a handy pick that works surprisingly well on hard dirt.2. The hatchet edge will need sharpening before you can use it. I practiced on some saplings and it works well enough. An actual axe would have been better, but that's one more tool to carry.3. I would rate the saw as ok.4. I thought the hammer head was a gimmick but it works reasonably well.5. The wire cutters are funky because you have to use the shovel head as one of the handles, but they do work. The shovel folds up nice and compact. The set screw holds the head in place, can be manipulated by hand, and does not unscrew all the way so you can't lose it. Nice touch.I did some abuse testing of the handle and have yet to break it. The handle is made of locust wood, which is light, strong, and resistant to rot. A wooden handle might seem antiquated, but it has a secret value: if you break it in the field, you can remove it and fashion a new one out of a tree branch. If you don't have any faith in the wood, remove it and weld a length of steel pipe in there instead. This shovel is kind of like a swiss army knife; it does no one things spectacularly well, but it does many things reasonably well. If you are willing to sacrifice some performance, you can carry around several tools in one with this shovel. Pair it with a good multitool, and you should have enough equipment to deal with most situations. Some say this shovel is too expensive. It is pricey, but it is lightyears better than the GI entrenching tool, and is quite well made for a china product.
