The Art of Hand Lettering for Beginners: Beautiful Projects and Essential Techniques

I have been following Joanna on Instagram for a while now, because I enjoy her sense of humor and love her style. I am not very good at learning things online because of the distractions, so a physical copy of her book is what I needed to get started. I didn't even know there was a difference between lettering and calligraphy! I have a graphic design background, and though I don't really do much with it anymore, I've always wanted to pick up hand lettering. This beginners book is great because it tells you what tools to buy (even some you'd think hand lettering is above, but are so simple), and it helps you with every brush stroke.I love this book because she has multiple pages with guidelines on different font styles and instructions on where to start with each letter. To practice, I scan in the pages and trace over her work, just to get the feel down and until I feel comfortable enough to move on to giving it a go on my own. I typeset a couple of my favorite movie quotes and framed them. My goal is to use this book to help me replace them with my own hand-lettered stuff!

She has a light and happy style and fun is front and center. She gives clear advice, offers up lots of simple and clear ways to practice, and includes a ton of projects you can take on.My favorite is the creation of Fonts! It's so cool and seemed completely impossible to do, but Joanna's simple process makes it easy.Everything in the book feels handcrafted. She didn't hire someone to do the work, she obviously did everything herself. Even the borders are hand drawn in the margins! Super cool.There's also a TON of technical information to help you figure out why you do what you do. She thoughtfully walks you through the process. She teaches you not just how to sketch, but why.If you wanted to start learning from an expert, this is the book for you!

So, I bought this book to add a touch of fancy flair to my Christmas gift tags. Let me just say that I was pretty impressed with myself in the little time I had to practice. The book is so super simple to follow that I found my 8 year old immersed in its numerous practice pages, attempting to perfect her lettering strokes. There are also easy to follow projects for those that want to take it a step further and show off their newly garnered skills.Great book! Simple, straightforward and uncomplicated for beginners like me!

Great book. For some reason I can't upload pictures, but the pages are pretty thick so I found that my regular crayola marker in gray worked best and didn't show through. I also tested the kuretake zig memory chisel tip calligraphy marker in a dark pink and it didn't bleed AT ALL surprisingly. Only one that had somewhat of a shadow was my kuretake brush tip marker in dark blue. I used a light gray color in that brand and no shadow. Not bad, but use lighter colors like gray if you can to be safe and you'll get no shadow. Wonderfully written book. Glad I purchased. It's the best hand lettering book I have come across so far.

Great starter book for girls.

I love this book! It's very detailed, straightforward and easy to follow! It also includes practice pages and a link you can use to print out practice pages if you need them (I especially love this because the book is so pretty that I wouldnt want to ruin its practice pages with my beginners hand lettering so yay for that little bonus)The project ideas are fun and as I mentioned earlier, there are many fonts to choose from! Great practice book, would recommend!

Everything you want to know about hand writing and lettering when you're an absolute beginner. Her explanations are thorough and precise. The personal story is a great touch. My handwriting is 10x better having read this book!

I've been doing calligraphy for a while and sometimes buy books to see if anything new or different available techniques. This book was pretty basic, so good for true beginners. The quality of the paper was not very good either.

Really like this book. Lots of helpful info and tips to get started.

A good mix of information about hand lettering and practise sheets. Lost one star as it is a little bit flimsier feeling than I expected, but there are quite a few pages.

Easy to use my niece loves it.
