Metropolis & Memories - Anime Double Feature

Good movie but the plot needs time to breathe.
This movie is based on the silent movie metropolis and the manga made by Osamu Tezuka and a bit of Tintin. Now keep in mind I have neither seen the silent film or read the manga. The movie is about a young boy and his uncle a detective coming to the city of metropolis, a sort of futuristic city where they are searching for a mad scientist who they believed escaped into the city and is continuing his mad science experiments.Since the city is unable to help they give them a robot assistant/detective.However, throughout the film we learn that the mad scientist is working with the “leader”of metropolis into building a sort ai for the city but also a replacement robot of his dead daughter. However this “leader”has an adopted son named rock (whom I was told appears in tezuka other works and reminds me of blues from megamind) who opposes robots and is part of an anti robot organization and plans on stopping the project.Due to circumstances the nephew is torn apart from his uncle with the robot who has amnesia in a different (bad) part of the city. Now this movie was made in 2001 and it is gorgeous including the backgrounds. A lot of love and labor went into it. However some scenes or animation I felt were a little slow, or should have been moving a lot more faster compared to movies made in the past and some cgi stood out.(For example there a scene where one of the characters are running from another, but it felt kind of slow and more things should have been happening)Now I felt the movie didn’t give time for the plot time to breathe, I felt like it going between the uncle and the robot detective and the nephew and the robot girl felt to fast.(It might focus on the uncle for one minute and the boy for three minutes before switching back)And I really wanted the movie to focus as much time to the uncle (Ban) as it did with nephew. (Kenichi). We see Kenichi was becoming friends with Tima (the robot girl) and the same with Ban becoming friends with Pero (the robot assistant) but the plot couldn’t focus on the characters consistently , that when one character dies and the other becomes evil it doesn’t feel as impactful. Not only that there isn’t a lot of detective work done it’s just things happening to the character. Also Tema almost falls into the born sexy yesterday trope.Plus we never see rock or human tema backstories or their relationship with their “father” except a few pieces of dialogue and even that is little to none.Which is a shame because it shows that the father was so busy trying to replace his daughter that he neglected his son right in front on him.And tema doesn’t have much time to grabble learning she’s a robot either.I will say one thing though, it handles robot discrimination better than any other media I’ve consumed. And it doesn’t portray human or machine (robot) as bad. And we see the impact this environment has on both robots and humans. Also doesn’t include commentary or really any special feature but a trailer for the movie. Also at the end of the credits we see a picture of one of the characters rebuilt the other one but not the other robot (which is a shame) but I don’t think this disc includes this frame or scene. And if you’re wondering about memories it’s basically three short stories the best one being the short memories.Basically some astronaut board a possibly abandoned space ship but is there a ghost or something more.

Bargain price, bargain quality
The memories dvd has no special features or setup in any way. The metropolis dvd did have some setup options and extra features however. Overall if you're looking to watch both of these it's an alright deal.

MEMORIES is neither dubbed nor subtitled in English.
Don't purchase this if you don't speak Japanese. The seller does not indicate that MEMORIES is in Japanese only. I don't know if MEMORIES has ever been subtitled, but I seem to recall seeing it either subtitled or dubbed many years ago. If I am wrong, it's still no excuse for the seller to hide the fact that one of the features is unintelligible. I'm not happy with this seller.

A bit if a disappointment
The only resalable priced way to get memories on DVD that isn't out of print. That said, the quality is pretty poor looking. This honestly looks like a bootlegg version with how poor the video quality is.

Decent
If you're like me and you wanted to buy this for memories its okay copy despite what other reviews say it does have English subtitles it just the menu is so simple it doesn't include anything but a play option, you have to use the subtitles button on your remote to access them. the video quality isn't great it does almost look like a bad pirated copy but I don't know what the other releases look like so this might be second to the blu ray release. metropolis doesn't look incredible either but it does have a better menu

Memories is in Japanese with no English subtitles
Only Metropolis has English audio. The store page description is misleading.
