Honest review by dietitian
After reading this DASH Diet weight loss program/cookbook and trying several recipes, I've put together a list of pros and cons followed by my overall thoughts.Pros-Starts with an accurate and easy to read overview on the DASH diet-Uses positive messages and evidence based recommendations for weight loss-Provides several example meal plans and exercise plans-Includes shopping lists and meal prep lists for the weekly meal plans-The meals and snacks laid out in the meal plans look appetizing-Recipes don't include hard to find ingredients-Recipes are tasty-Includes nutrition information and amount of servings (though the serving size is not always listed)-Includes substitution, cooking, and variation tips for each recipe to suite a range of preferences-Includes ideas on how to make the dish a complete meal if it isn't already a "meal in one"-Includes the best way to store and reheat leftovers for the recipesCons-The shopping lists, especially for the first meal plan, are extensive (and expensive) which can easily overwhelm the reader-Doesn't include many photos (only 8 to be exact) of the 100 recipes-Some of the recipes are actually moderate in sodium content and if not a "meal in one" can become a high sodium meal if paired with a suggestion like "serve with soup or half sandwich" to make it a meal-Some snacks in the example meal plans are really more like desserts than they are snacks due to the amount of added sugars in the recipes-Added sugars are not included in the nutrition information-A handful of vegetable sides are oddly bundled together in the dessert and snack chapterOverall, I enjoyed reading this and trying the recipes. I believe this book could be useful for many people looking to improve their health and also for health professionals that recommend the DASH Diet to their patients. Reducing the amount of salt and added sugars by 25% in many of the recipes would make this cookbook more DASH friendly without compromising too much flavor.

Not a book for retirees
This book has some good information, especially for people just starting to eat healthfully. But I have been cooking at home for years and wanted new, tasty recipes that will not raise my blood pressure. So far, have tried two recipes and I am disappointed. Heavy on the cayenne pepper but no depth. And...authors assume everyone has a microwave, a food processor, an immersion blender and a stand mixer. I never had a stand mixer and gave away most kitchen gadgets when we down-sized our home.

You deserve this!
I hate diets. Have tried every kind. This is NOT your same old diet! This is just healthy living. The recipes are amazing—like being in an upscale restaurant. Great instructions too. I never liked tofu, and hesitated to try the green bean tofu stir fry. Who knew the secret to delicious tofu was getting out all the water first!!! That is now my favorite recipe. My husband also loves our new way of eating. It’s only been 2 months, but he has lost 16 pounds, and I am down 14! More importantly, my morning fasting blood sugar has gone from 170’s to under120! Both of us have experienced a drop in blood pressure too! We want to enjoy our retirement by staying healthy. This lifestyle plan is just what the doctor ordered!!! Go for it!

Delicious way to add more wholesome foods to your diet
I have loved this book so far. The information in the beginning of the book regarding the DASH diet is well thought out and easy to read. I love that it touches on other aspects of health, as well (exercise, sleep, hydration, etc.). Most of the recipes we’ve tried have been a hit with the whole family (me, my husband and two young children). I’m not using the recipes for weight loss, but rather a way to add more of a variety of wholesome foods to our diet. Some of our favorites have been the broccoli cheese egg muffins, spaghetti and chicken meatballs, grilled salmon with chimichurri, chicken tortilla casserole, taco stuffed sweet potatoes (which I made into a skillet meal instead) and the chicken and mandarin orange salad with sesame ginger dressing. I look forward to trying more recipes from the book!

This book is probably a life saver for us..... fantastic guide.
My husband & I decided it was time to NOT “ go on a diet” but to due to weight gain and diabetes, it was time to make lifetime changes. We are about to start our 4th week. We have rid our cabinets and fridge of all the junk and processed food. We have enjoyed most every receipe so far with an exception of about two. We have enjoyed shopping together and it’s now a team effort. I cook and he loads/ unloads the dishwasher. This book has been so helpful and we plan to continue using it to stay on track. We have tried many diets and plans, this seems to work the best for us.

Best recipes!
This book has been so easy to follow and we've been happy with all the recipes we've tried so far. The ingredients are common everyday ones I had in my pantry and that makes it so much easier. My husband and I have both had success on the scale since we've started this and there is no reason why it wouldn't be sustainable after we reach our goal weights.

Lifestyle change made easy!
This book is organized very well between meal planning, breaking down grocery lists (making shopping easy) and even listing workout regimens to try. It is a non-intimidating, and easily spelled out reference for those looking to begin a “healthy lifestyle” change! The recipes are not only creative but healthy too, double win for all!

Disappointing
I was disappointed by this book. Firstly I had not realised that it was produced in America - I purchased it on Amazon.co.uk and I guess I did not pay attention. No great problem but all the measurements on the recipes are in 'cups' etc. and some of the ingredients are strange or even unheard of. But the thing I really did not like was that most of the recipes are for 4, 6 or 8 people. How often do people go on a diet plan with anyone else? Most dieting is a solo pursuit and while I could start scaling the recipes down, I would have much preferred it if I did not have to do that just to make meals for myself. I think the combination of these two factors will mean this book will stay on the shelf, or end up down the local charity shop.

Just a bad recipe book
It started out good with clear description of nutrition and causes of overweight and high blood pressure. Then the bulk of the book becomes one collection of recipes that personally I would never use or consider making. A lot of them are simply awful recipes. I would have rather the book focus more on different foods and how to prepare it. For example different ways of prepping chicken, removing skin, using lemons or lime for flavours. Wasted $9.99.
