FRCPath, Part 1: Examination Preparation Guide

This is the only book really for this exam so if you are doing it, get it! Having said that there are lots of typos, errors and the occasional wrong answer (take it from someone obsessed enough to check everything and not wanting to pay for a re-sit!).Beware - the new exam has a picture section in the MCQs and the EMQ section in the real exam has many, many more options (usually up to T I think) than in this book (up to 8ish options I think) so it was quite a shock to many of us when you get to the exam hall..... Many of us thought we would do the exam in much less time having timed ourselves with this book but found that the real exam took much longer (this is only in part to the numerous more options in the real exam and was also in part due to the stressful situation). Do remember though, the exam is not perfectly written and has typos and wrong answers, so it at least reflects real life! Also I would say that although the questions in the book are on par with those in the exam, the exam also had some much more difficult questions.With these caveats borne in mind this is a very useful book. Hopefully the second edition will follow soon and will improve upon these drawbacks.

This is laid out like the part 1 exam so is good for timing practise papers. It covers topics which you need to know but don't cover in day to day work, such as categories of diagnostic error, management structure etc. Unfortunately some questions contain errors e.g. the correct answer is not one of the options, but when you get to the page with the answers on, the answer is listed as option D, but the diagnosis the answer page attributes to option D is not the one given in the original question. There are a few spelling mistakes too. All in all it's a good book, but I found the errors frustrating at times.

There's a dearth of good preparatory material for the FRCPath Part 1, so this book makes a useful revision aid.However, it is long overdue an update (published in 2011), and doesn't include important molecular pathology developments. Many of the questions don't appear to have been proofread, with multiple spelling errors and mismatches between the answer key and correct questions.The printing and binding is quite flimsy, and doesn't justify the price. Additionally, this book contains none of the picture-based questions which are increasingly a part of the Part 1 examination.

Would be better if there were pictures, some errors in finding the right answers, not beautifully presented. But I appreciate the helpfulness of having this available to help prepare for the exam.

Very easy to use and good explanations of answers. Some answers, however, are listed incorrectly. It is better to use the explanations when checking answers rather than the list of letters.

while the MCQ and EMQ were more than adequately represented(some were actually present in the exam), image based questions were missing in the book.Could help if authors could provide more instructions regarding the exam... especially for non-UK candidates.

Very good condition. Excellent book for preparation for the FRCPath part 1 exam.
