The simplest way to tell is by the consistency of the oil. Sandalwood, like vetiver and german (blue) chamomile, is very thick. So thick you can't even get it into a dropper without warming it first. This oil is as thin as water. Since it smells similar to the real thing, though not as strong, I would call it a fragrance oil. This is not something you could use for aromatherapy or diy skincare products, as it won't have any of an essential oil's benefits. If all you're looking for is the scent of sandalwood, then this is a cheap alternative to a real essential oil.
