Richard D. James' fourth, autobiographical' album as Aphex Twin is regarded as his 'drill n' bass' showpiece. Originally released in 1996, 'Richard D. James' continues the lineage of his digital era (beginning from the previous Aphex Twin album, '...I Care Because You Do'), where familiar, playful melody locks into aggressive, hyperspeed breakbeats and quasi-jungle rhythms. This album also yielded the single 'Girl / Boy Song' which, memorably, uses a self-parodying, macabre image of grave, scribed 'Richard James - November 1968' as a sleeve image. Characteristically, 'Richard D. James' employs audio generated electronically, whilst furthering his ideas of more 'concrÄ?te' techniques such as sampling, distorting, looping and the use of human voice, physical instruments and environmental sound. As compelling a listen today as it ever was. CD Jewel Case

An Adventure In Recorded Sound
From stuttering stops to blistering beats and flashes of noises ranging from synthesiers to recorded voices Aphex Twins 1996 effort, "Richard D. James Album", is an album that will keep you listening through and through no matter how many times you have listened to it, and depending on your musical tastes may take some getting used before you fully appreaciate the genius of the music on here. Prime examples of some of the insane music you hear on this album would be on tracks such as, "Corn Mouth", "4", etc. This album still holds up today because of the fact that it was and is ahead of its time in the realm of the electrnoica music genre and paving the way for artists such as, Radiohead to fully incorporate the use of combining electrnoic music elements with standard musical instruments. So what are you waiting for if you want to hear some of the most insane greatest electrnoic music around than this album if for you.

A masterpiece!
I consider this album to be a masterpiece from a sick genius. The composition and arrangement of the tracks may not be noticed to the casual listener, or at first listen; but repeat listening will prove that the violent, fast-tempo drums may shroud the often beautiful string arrangements and complex patterns beneath. The tracks: 4, Peek 824545201, To Cure a Weakling Child, and Girl/Boy Song are my most favorites. Their titles are often appropriate, conveying the feel of each track. For those that like or love this album, or Aphex Twin in general, I would highly recommend the album: Acoustica: Alarm Will Sound Performs Aphex Twin. This is an album of Aphex Twin tracks covered by an acoustic orchestra! Absolutely wonderful accompaniment to the Aphex Twin fans collection!

Weird, Intense, and Innovative
Aphex Twin, Richard D. James, is one of the most innovative techno/electronica artists out there today. Many people say that his Selected Ambient Works 85-92 is his best, while others say his EP, Come to Daddy. Personally, I like I Care Because You Do as his best, but you have others saying that The Richard D. James album is the best. I think it is his most experimental and innovative. James is a master at putting together beautiful ambient melodies with harsh, dissonant sounds. However, he takes this to the extreme on this CD with a "drill and bass" approach. This is not an easy album to listen to but then again this is what makes him so unique. It is so intense that I wouldn't recommend listening to this several days in a row because it could probably cause you to go crazy. I give it 4 stars because it is so hard to listen to; however, it is a brilliant and bold statement made by one of the greatest musicians of recent times.

I have to be honest,
I know exactly why people rate this much higher than i have. I'm not criticizing anyone who rated this higher; this is just a personal opinion. Basically, after hearing what Richard D. James is capable of, this just fell short of a few expectations. I LOVE most of the songs, but there are a couple of songs i dont like as much that drag the whole album down for me. Tracks like "4", "Peek", "Girl/Boy Song", "Yellow Calx" and "Milkmen" are GREAT! I love listening to these tracks because they're so cleverly made. But, for example, the high pitched keyboard in "Corn Mouth" and the whilstles in "Logon Rock Witch" just come across as annoying. I respect experimentation in music (please dont get me wrong), and i listen to a lot of music like Merzbow, Sunn0))), Sonic Youth, but when i hear some sounds on this album, i skip a track. I'm not sure what others think of this, but it's just these tiny things that ruin it a little bit for me...HOWEVER, i still think people should buy this. I'm giving this 3 and a half stars, because a majority of the songs on this album are freakin awesome but it's just those couple of tracks that i could have done without. I recommend people to buy "Selected Ambient Works" and "I Care Because You Do" first.
