Great book but description is wrong
Description says this book is 120 pages but actually it's 78 pages.. So if you are buying this expecting 120 pages, you will be disappointed.. However the story, the art and the built of the book is great. So you will not regret buying this at all. You will enjoy this book, so go for it

French Noir
This is a graphic novel adaptation of a popular French private eye series. Similar to Darwyn Cooke's adaptation of the Parker series, this book deals with grim material and characters, including the protagonist, who are not very likeable. They are former anarchists, sell-outs, bitter men with grey lives and anger subsided under years of failure. All the dreams of their youths were turned to ashes under the Nazi occupation of their country and the best they can manage is to try and grasp some happiness through money or alcohol. Our hero, Nestor Burma, receives a letter from a man who claims to know him, but he does not remember, and is soon drawn into a murder mystery with connections to a decades old crime and political motivations gone bad. It's interesting and Tardi's style certainly lends emotional weight to the grim proceedings. My only criticism is that the main character seems to be constantly playing catch up and almost seems like an observer in his own tale.

Very foggy!
A classic story adapted by a master of the form. Smell the Gauloises!

Genius storytelling from a previous generation
I bought this graphic novel because so few of Leo Malet's detective stories ("Nestor Burma") are available in translation. I was not disappointed. The story follows Malet's own life quite closely in that his own anarchist past (the late 1920s) features and of course Burma is an avatar for him. The story is bleak and there is a last-page killing that Malet clarifies in an afterword he was not 'allowed' by readers/fans because the character he 'offed' was so powerful (she later returned - writers can do that, unlike life).

Nestor Burma is fantastic
A great intro into Tardi's Léo Malet work. I only wish that Fantagraphics would make releasing these a priority, or at the very least combine multiple stories into one book. This book leaves you wanting more but there's not another Nestor Burma book on the horizon in the foreseeable future according to the Fantagraphics release list.
