Large on Detail, Short on Action.
I did enjoy the detail and obvious painstaking research done by the author in this book, but was slightly dissapointed by the lack of text concerning the battles and engagements between the soldiers guarding the overland trails and the tribes of Sioux and Cheyenne fighting for their way of life. The book is long on army-life on the frontier, but just never takes off when a battle is presented. Still, a very informative read. I would also recommend "Circle of Fire: The Indian War of 1865" by John C. McDermott for more detail on the same battles covered in this book.

This is an incredibly detailed history of the happenings in Wyoming on the Oregon/California/Cherokee trails in Wyoming during the mid 19th century, the focal point of Indian Wars tension prior to the Little Big Horn event I wish this could be required reading for all Wyoming citizens as well as anyone who had an interest in immigrant migration in the 1800's. It portrays the extreme difficulties the US Government had protecting the westward migration (the largest mass-migration in human history). It does not soft sell the pain and hardships endured by all sides during this monumental period. When the government forced the shutdown of the Oregon Trail and rerouted immigrants onto the Cherokee trail in southern Wyoming, for the protection of the immigrants, it created a whole new set of challenges. Tensions, suffering, & death were the theme of the day. This is a well documented history by the foremost authoritie on this subject, Dr. Robert H. Jones, a superb history!

Battle of Platte Bridge Station/Battle of Red Buttes
Nicely put together account of the men who served with the Eleventh Ohio cavalry, in what is now Wyoming, Colorado and the panhandle of Nebraska along thepioneer trails during the Civil War years. Good accounts of the Battle of Platte Bridge, and the Battle of Red Buttes in Central Wyoming.
