These battery powered candles are a great substitute. They flicker slightly, which adds to the realism. I love the timer function. I just had to turn them on once at the right time in the evening, and now they come on each time. The batteries that came with the candles didn't last very long, only about six weeks. Maybe my expectations are too high. We replaced the batteries and are waiting to see how long the fresh batteries last.
