What is the trick to get this thing to work ? Myself  nor my 12 yr old daughter can get it to spin

Question 2

Daughter got this for Christmas and the white piece on the arm to hold the thread broke at first touch. Is there a replacement piece available?

Do you mean the little white clip( on the end of the arm) broke off? or do you mean the whole white arm broke? The white arm will "spong" back and maybe look broken when you release it by pushing down on the end - it's supposed to do that to pull up on the braid, but if no braid is there the spring will make it fly back. You can just push it back down, with its white tip flipped UP it will catch and stay down. When you flip the tip DOWN it will release the arm again. If the little white CLIP broke off the tip, you wont' be able to clip a braid on, but you can probably hack it to work by tying a loop of string around the top of the braid and hanging THAT in some way over the end of the white arm. I often hang the braid like that (but onto the clip) when making a longer braid...

How can you bypass the spring arm to make a much longer cord?

I have made cords as long as 9 feet using embroidery floss, though 4.5 feet is easier. The length limitation is not from the spring arm, it's the size of the spools. See my blog post for workarounds, photos:   https://loopbraider.com/2019/02/14/toy-braiding-machine/     For the spring arm, just use a "lasso" type loop of thread to hang the braid onto the clip, then when the arm has stretched all the way back, stop and slide the noose lower down on the braid and keep going.
