Pimsleur Tagalog Conversational Course - Level 1 Lessons 1-16 CD: Learn to Speak and Understand Tagalog with Pimsleur Language Programs Review: The language is difficult... unlike Spanish which has Latin roots... Dont expect to learn Tagalog overnight and be committed. - Due to several negative reviews, I nearly passed on this superb resource. The Tagalog language is not easy to learn for English speaking people. While there are some Spanish words, the language is anything but Latin, coming down through the Austronesian people. I would say that you have to be committed on wanting to know the language and because of the fact that it does not come from Latin roots, It will likely take several years to master, if spoken regularly. My wife is Filipino and we go to the Philippines often. So... I strongly recommend this trainer, ESPECIALLY for the price. Awesome value! Thanks Pimsleur! Review: Learning Tagalog - I think this course is structured pretty well and could be useful in learning Tagalog as a second language. It starts off with basic conversational skills and reinforces what you learn over and over. The hardest part is making the time to listen to the audio course. You have to listen and repeat, listen and repeat. I have found the only time I can do this is on long trips in the car, which is where I have used it. At those times you are a captive audience and really have nothing better to do. Instead of listening to music, I find that the audio course keeps you engaged and alert, as you have to pay attention to what is being spoken and you have to respond verbally. Of course anyone else around you in traffic thinks you're probably a nutjob for talking to yourself in a foreign language..... but that's a small price to pay.

very effective
I use these CD's on the drive to/from work, and they have proven most effective. I listen to each one about 2 or 3 times until I absorbed about 90% of the material. I think this is necessary because I'm partially focusing on the road. The CD's stay true to the title. All lessons are really working through a conversation, and not just repetitive memorization. I've made some good progress, and my filipino wife is quite impressed with what I've learned. I recommend this to anyone. I know my father tried Pimsleur's french lessons and had a equally good experience. the only negative is that you don't learn the spelling, but so what. I think their conversational technique is much more effective then a written lesson.

Perfect
Love these! I listen to a lesson every night and am almost done with my first set. My husband is originally from the Philippines and has been helping me with some of the pronunciation. He says the discs are very accurate and are even helping him refresh his tagalog skills since he doesn't get to speak Tagalog as much anymore. I can't wait to get the next set! Marunong ko nung kaunti tagalog!!

Good method of teaching for a beginner!
I purchased this product for my partner who wants to be able to converse in Tagalog. I was really impress at the speed of his development. He typically listens to the CDs in the car on his way to work. I have sat with him too while listening to some of the units. It was really clear and very well planned. I would not hesitate recommending this to anyone wanting to learn Tagalog. It also makes me want to purchase other Pimsleur language products to learn a different language!

Overall great
Okay, I am writing this review for the Tagalog CDs. Overall great product, the biggest advantage this product has over other ones is that it doesn't require additional time spent in the day as compared to the computer software competition. I am able to listen to the material going to and from work. The 'R.S.' one I'd about 150 hours, compared to 30 for pimsleur CD. Please note this is only 16 lessons/8 hours... The complete course is 30 hours 60 lessons. The only thing I think they could do better is a workbook to go along with the product and an introduction to the alphabet and pronouncing of the sounds. The Ng , ngu , nga are difficult to speak for English speakers. There is another CD/workbook that's significant cheaper on the market by another competitor. Overall I am on lesson 5 and happy I bought it. I will be buying the additional set. I canunderstand some Tagalog in movies and hold a basic conversation. You LL need additional material to help you. Magandang tanghali, salamat po.

The product itself is good....
The product is good and I have used Pimsleur products many times but I just cannot grasp this language. The reason for my 3 star rating is more of a personal issue with the language itself than it is the software. If you have a strong desire to learn Tagalog than by all means purchase this but for myself I will stick with what I like.

It's not an easy language. Also
I may never learn tagalog. It's not an easy language. Also, Filipinos have more than 30 dialects besides Tagalog. Apparently, Tagalog is the main language (besides English). If you are going to Cebu, they speak a version of Spanish that is very close to the type spoken in Mexico. But they also speak Tagalog. The poor people (less well educated) speak very little English. But you can get by with just English.

I lived for years around Tagalog speaking people without improving my language skills. This starter kit had me understanding and speaking basic Tagalog in less than 2 weeks with 1 lesson of 30 minutes per day.

Great concept, but no reference material, to explain the spelling of words. It provided only the auditory.
