Sonder Los Angeles Motley Cutting Board, Walnut Cherry Maple, 17x13x1.1 in

This walnut cutting board is a nice heavy weight to where it doesn’t move when you’re using it, but it’s not so heavy that you can’t easily pick it up. I like the quality of the walnut wood and the groove handles. I didn’t want to note that it can easily get scratched with daily or weekly use, which doesn’t bother me since it’s a cutting board and that is the purpose for it. However, some people might not like that as much and think that the board is of a lower quality. I attached a photo of what mine looks like now after several months of use. Thus far I have not experienced any warping or staining, but I do try to maintain it with the John Boos cutting board oil. Overall I think this was a good but not outstanding value for the money I spent to purchase it.

I am so happy with my Motley Board by Sonder Los Angeles!!!! I want to buy all of their boards! Presentation: I love opening presents and that is what it felt like to get my Motley board in its cute packaging! It would be perfect to send as a gift in the packaging it comes in. I have attached the photos of the box so you can see how pretty it is. Quality: I love the thickness and sturdiness of this board. The woodgrain details are so beautiful and unique. I chopped veggies on my board and it still looks brand new. The board is completely smooth and crafted quite nicely! Functionality: After using the board I was able to clean it with no issues. Everything wiped off easily. I really like the grooves on the side of the board for easy lifting. This will come in handy when I use it as a charcuterie board. There is also a nice groove on one side to place crackers or whatever. I plan to use this board in so many ways...decoration (since it is soooooo pretty- who could store it in a cabinet? No way.), cutting board, a vessel to bring snacks to friends during cocktail hour, etc. Recommendation: I would absolutely recommend this board to anyone who loves a cool, statement cutting board that doesn't lack craftsmanship! I would also highly recommend giving this as a gift! If you can't tell....I really LOVE this board!

This is a beautiful cutting board! I love the feel of it, the weight, the size, the stability, the way it looks in my kitchen. I’ve never spent that much money on a cutting board but it was worth every dime. Everyone deserves a treat and this one was mine.

I absolutely love my Sonder Los Angeles Large Walnut/Cherry/Maple Wood Cutting Board! The craftsmanship is outstanding, and the combination of woods is just beautiful. It’s a centerpiece in my kitchen. At first, I unfortunately used Clark’s cutting board cleaner, oil, and wax on it, which ended up damaging the board’s natural appearance. Luckily, I was able to remove their products and sand the board down carefully. After that, I used Howard’s cleaner, oil, and wax, and the transformation was amazing — it brought the board back to its rich, natural beauty. The walnut, cherry, and maple really shine through now. I plan to continue maintaining it weekly with Howard’s conditioner to keep it looking its best. Sonder Los Angeles makes an incredible cutting board — just make sure you use high-quality products to care for it properly. Highly recommend!

Pros and cons on this one. Pros: Nice design. The stripes of various color wood are a very nice touch. Gives it a nice look. The handle cutouts are nice to have. I like the depressed area on the one side. I can think of many uses for that. Edge grain. Price is fairly enticing. Cons: In a word, Quality Control. At least that is my experience with issues like these. Firstly, it is not flat. I anticipated some warpage after moderate use due to the 1.1 inch thickness. Most quality cutting boards are 2 inches thick or more. However, this one needed to go through the planer several more times. Its got a very noticeable dip on one end of the lighter strips. Checking with calipers and a micrometer confirms high and low areas. It appears to have some crevices where the individual planks were joined which seem to be filled with something. It has a gouge on the flat face with some tomato juice colored discoloration. Worst is that it has a dented corner. You can see the fibers that are embedded in that dent. That is the protective material that lines the box. The cutting board box corner was dented as well but the outer Amazon box was not damaged. Leads me to believe it was dropped before packaging. Everthing taken into account makes me think it might be a return. But again the price is much lower than similar attractive cutting boards. Looks great on the counter Havent used it yet so can't comment on durability. Ill update my review when I have that info. Some of you may be wondering why I dont just exchange it. Well if the durability is not good then I wouldn't even want one with less quality defects. That and I really want to like this board and it seems like a small homegrown company. UPDATE 11/14/2019 The company has graciously offered to provide a replacement board, to include all expenses, without requiring the return of the original board. That is highly convenient as nobody likes going through the process of requesting and waiting for a return shipping label or even worse, paying the return shipping themselves. One of the founders also explained in detail the factors that went into design decisions and product testing results. Seems to be a decent company and thus far I'm impressed with their customer service. I'll report back on how smoothly the rest of the process plays out. As for the durability of the board, I am pleasantly surprised. I have used and washed the board numerous times. Using the same tests and measurements as the first inspection there is no discernable difference. It's holding up pretty well. Update 1/20/2020 I received a replacemet board in just a few days. Pay no attention to the timestamp on this update. I waited to do an update so I could report on the durability of this item. The replacent board had none of the defects that the original had. All measurements and tests have this one as flat and the same thickness throughout. My experience with using this board has been fairly pleasant. Dozens of tomatoes, carrots, over 100 onions, and pounds of cilantro and parseley have been chopped on this board. I'm pleased with the durability. No chips or splinters or discoloration. The combination of customer service and product quality means that I would certainly buy from this seller again.

I own two SONDER LA cutting boards, the Motley along with the other being the large teak Highland Cutting Board. No doubt they're both eye catching in the kitchen and perform as a cutting board should. But with only two months of use, the teak Highland board has developed a slight warp. A little surprising since it happened even after the consistent 3-week oiling cycle along with the added application of a board cream I use, but it is to be expected with cutting boards used in the kitchen. There are a few known techniques you can do to correct and lessen a warping issue with a wooden cutting board - if the warp becomes an eyesore, but the cutting board will perform as it should. An added note here is that you should ALWAYS prep your cutting board with a quality food grade mineral oil when the board is brand new, and the wood will absorb more oil than you would think if you have not done this process before. Nonetheless I still would consider buying another and would highly recommend their cutting boards to others.

This is a beautiful cutting board. Honestly it could be a piece of artwork to hang on your wall. It is also very high quality. You can feel the weight of the all wood board as well. Rare these days with any “wood” product. Very versatile as well. As you can see in the picture, it’s perfect for food presentation and serving. As a cutting surface, don’t know how it could be better. Is the price worth it / value there? Absolutely.

I'm a little bit too excited about this cutting board. It is absolutely stunning -- even more so in person than in the photos, which I didn't think was possible (my pics don't do it justice either, though they do have the added bonus of having a cute sleepy kitten in the background). The board arrived surprisingly fast (2 days after ordering, despite selecting Standard Shipping) and comes in a gorgeous calcatta marble-inspired box that I still can't bring myself to throw away. When you open the box, you're greeted with a sweet thank you note from the couple who runs Sonder LA, with detailed instructions on the back for how to properly care for the board. The note mentions that they started their business in order to address a gap in the market for affordable, versatile, aesthetically pleasing pieces that you'll want to show off in your home and kitchen. I'd say they hit that ball out of the park with the Motley. I seriously can't wait to bust this baby out next time I have folks over. I feel like a real adult now with nice things in my kitchen (look, Ma, a fancy cutting board!). Especially love the built-in groove in the back to hold your bread or crackers. Highly recommend this board as a gift to yourself or a loved one. It feels really great to support a small business while getting a beautiful, high quality product in the process -- you will not regret it! (Also, your cat will enjoy playing/hiding in the cardboard box it's shipped in. So, you know. Another bonus.)
