Vendor is making me pay for return postage and a 15% restocking fee due to their inadequate description.
WARNING: This is NOT an EXTERNAL DRIVE BAY, there is no power adapter It is only for use with network systems and racks. The vendor is making me pay for return postage and a 15% restocking fee due to their inadequate description. So won't be ordering from them again!

Nice and Cheap
Its a nice product that make you fit 5 HDD into a 3x5.45 bay. Unfortunatelly the instructions are not clear enough about the product itself and its very confusing trying to get to work properly at first.

A revised version of my old one: better in some ways, but with a disadvantage
Since two reviewers have reported that the product they received was not the one in the picture, I contacted Platinum Micro, one of Amazon's "alternate vendors" (for want of a better term), who suggested that the complaints concerned ones that were shipped directly by Amazon. So mine came from Platinum Micro and is indeed the one shown in the picture -- the one with the black locking handles. I already have one of these drive cages, which I bought almost two years ago from another online vendor. Cosmetically this new one is different, with the drive indicator LEDs in a different location and now blue (following the latest fashion) instead of green. iStarUSA's tech support assures me that this is the latest version and now will handle 4TB drives, whereas the previous version was limited to 3TB drives. Another advantage is that the tray handles are now perforated, allowing greater airflow to keep the drives cool. The drive LEDs are still not positioned immediately adjacent to the corresponding drives because room has to be left for the temperature and fan warning LEDs. One feature of these cages that has confused people in the past is the need to press tiny recessed buttons to apply power to the drives (a button for each drive). This revised version makes for an even greater likelihood of confusion, since the switches are no longer separate but are integrated with the LEDs (or with "light pipes" through which the LEDs shine); thus one appears to be pressing on the LED itself to activate the switch. The significant disadvantage is that there is now no "run continuously" setting for the fan: it runs for 10 seconds when first powered up but then does not run again until the internal temperature reaches 40 degrees Celsius. Any disk drive should be happy at this temperature, but the continuously running fan in the previous version keeps my drives at about 37 C, which should extend their life even further. The accompanying documentation showed a layout closer to the older model, and even the online version I found did not match the product I received 100%, but Tech Support sent me a link to the latest version of the documentation. Yet even the latest version is not clear at every point, especially concerning the functions of the two switches. The Fan switch is labeled "HIGH" and "AUTO," but in both settings the fan runs only when the temperature reaches 40 C (as noted above); the difference is (as explained to me by Tech Support) that with the switch in the HIGH position the fan runs at full speed when it is activated, whereas with the switch in the AUTO position the fan speed varies according to the temperature. The HDD LED switch is labeled "ENABLED" and "DISABLED," but this refers not to the blue illumination denoting that the drives are powered up but to the flashing purple when the drives are accessed.

Beware...
When ordering, do not select Amazon - pick another seller. Amazon shipped the wrong product. I requested a return/replacement, and again received the wrong item. So now I'm a couple weeks down the road and do not have this item.

Item does not match picture or description.
Yes, the other reviewer is correct, I should have listened. Picture and description show a 5 drive cage, what you will get is a 4 drive cage.

Better than the rating shown
This is so much better than the 2 stars currently shown. I've had mine for 18 months now running a FreeNAS ZFS array. I started with 1TB drives upgraded to 2TB drive and now have 5 3TB drives in it. Being a pass-through design it somewhat future proofs you as drives get bigger or SATA speeds increase. This has never even blinked no matter what I've put in it. Hot swap is clean and simple provided your Sata connection can handle it. I've got no real complaints but there are a few things I'd like to see changed. I'd want the drive indicator lights and the drive on-off switch under each drive with the reset, fan, and temp alarm lights on the top. The little locks are a bit tricky when you have hands my size (XXL) but do work and I don't have a suggestion how it could be done better. I'd also like some way to number the drives maybe a little slot in the handle a number could slide into, it would look so much better then the scotch tape with a gold pen I currently use.. Minor things for sure but that is why it gets 4 stars instead of 5. I'm planning to get another one later this year for another build.
