A Visual Inventory

Phaidon Press typically produces quality goods and this set is no exception. It arrives in a beautiful, good for gift-giving long paper box and the cards are printed on very thick, matte eggshell cardstock. I’d have preferred the image side to be glossy as I think it would better suit Pawson’s photography but that’s a piddly complaint. The majority of the photos are Pawson’s 2009-2011 work. A few from earlier in the decade are included too.The selected images are a lovely mix of artistic nature shots and eye-catching architecture; most should be a big hit with Postcrossers (like me). The set is mainly without duds; they all grab you and demand you look further.A downside is the very obvious perforation marks that remain when you separate the cards—there’s 2 cards per each long ‘sheet’. I trimmed this off with a paper cutter as it really distracts from the otherwise stellar quality. One more note: the 4-6 lines of the informational blurb, on each card, takes up a generous chunk of the bottom right side. The USPS frowns on this much text below the address and domestic recipients won’t be able to read it all due to the barcoding. Add in two big logos/title of the set and you have VERY little space to write. I think collectors won’t care a bit but for practical mailing purposes, not so much; I deducted a star. Verdict? Absolutely beautiful work on the paper stock and beauty/variety of the images, not so great for the wordy amongst us.

It could be useful for persons who would appreciate stimulation of visual perception. It amounts to a sort of photographer's sketchbook. Pawson certainly has an eye for graphic images and ones that often tell a story. I am amused that the images are presented in pairs and it is in this format I find that there is more to learn and understand.

there are alot of more gifted photographers ,but if you like the pawson architecture look it's so interesting to see what influenced him

Interesting for anyone who is interested in the work of John Pawson.You can smell in this book the architectural vision of JP (which is stunning).This is not an architecture book in the usual way, but you will learn a lot!

A really good choice and a very good book! I would definitely recommend it to the lovers of that work.
